Old School

How can I get my drums to sound crunchy, filthy and dirty. A good example would be like those old school hip-hop songs. If you want an example, head over to http://www.mpc-samples.com

crunchy - batter dip then hard fry

filthy - duh, don't wash them

dirty - again, keep them away from soap.

Also, try dropping sample rates, distortion, bit grinding, re-sampling to lower bit depth then convet back to 16bit. A few different things you could try. Some you might need a pc/mac to accomplish though depending on your MPC model.

Or get another sampler like the s950

heres atrick try sampling of a record the sound you want then resample it to a tape player and sample it back to your mpc at a lower rate from the tape you get a great sound, you can experiment then to get your own sound you want. use older drum machine sounds too.

^^ im bout to do that with my 1k, im just gonna sample all my drums from pc onto tape, then into the mpc

Layering.

Like find a weaker kick that you like its grit.......and layer it with an 808, etc. That way you get the pucnhy bass with the grit. filters sometimes work too. OVerdriving you mixer. Maybe take your drum samples into sound forge.......or something similar...and apply some plug in to it. Like the "telephone effect" then mix that back in with the original. Or eq it, mix it back in. Fliter it, lower the bit rate, etc.

But if you find that after you sampled it to tape or whatever and it doesnt have its original punch.......just layer it with the original. Cut some frequnecies if you have to.

Another way I could have described it, was, THE SP1200!!!

I made a drum loop and loaded it into SoundForge. Resampled it to a lower bit-rate, and it sounds amazing!
