Layering.
Like find a weaker kick that you like its grit.......and layer it with an 808, etc. That way you get the pucnhy bass with the grit. filters sometimes work too. OVerdriving you mixer. Maybe take your drum samples into sound forge.......or something similar...and apply some plug in to it. Like the "telephone effect" then mix that back in with the original. Or eq it, mix it back in. Fliter it, lower the bit rate, etc.
But if you find that after you sampled it to tape or whatever and it doesnt have its original punch.......just layer it with the original. Cut some frequnecies if you have to.
