Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

By homershines Thu Aug 28, 2003 12:45 pm
The ASR10 comes from an older generation of producers. It's a powerful machine. RZA and a lot of folks used/use it. It's sound is nice. It is a sampler with lots of synthesis possibilities. There are also lots of sound disks available for it, to cop some synth sounds that you don't have access to. But with the MPC, you already have a sampler.

The Triton is a modern tool. It is definitely the child of the Keyboard Beat age. Since so many Hiphop producers don't dig anymore and just create Keyboard Beats, Korg created the perfect tool. It has a huge set of sounds built in and all kinds of expansion possibilities and the FX are awesome.

The questions are:

What kind of music do you wanna create?

Is money an issue?

If you wanna make records that sound like what's on the radio, you may want the Triton. If not, the ASR10 is cool. If you got cheez, the Triton is the choice. If you don't, the ASR10 is phat. If you can find an ASR10 in good condition and know where to get it serviced should it need some, that's cool too.

Good luck.

ah man...that's a good one...my man, produced a track for me on the ASR10...oh my God!...the hotness...the sounds in the ASR10 are lovely...now the Trition on the other hand is cool...like my man the Triton is modern, everybody's usin' it...comin' from the perspective of bein' a veteran generation, i would perfer the ASR10...because of the sounds...it got stuff in it that you just don't hear on the regular...as far as beats, that's why you got the MP-...as far as availability, of course you may find the Trition before the ASR10...however, i perfer the classic sound of the ASR10...peace...

I rock an asr 10, ITs funny cuz I got a trinity rack Im borrowing from a friend and i use the asr10 waaaayyy more. the trinity isnt even plugged in right now.

The thing is, if you play keys, then you will like the asr simply because THE KEYS ARE THE BEST ONES ON ANY KEYBOARD IVE TOUCHED. They feel almost like a real piano, well made. THe Tritons done even come close. Plus the triton sound next to the asr10 sound, its no comparison, the sequencer in the triton is far superior to the asr10's but w/ a mpc you dont need the sequencers anyway.
The EFFECTS in the ASR 10 are super phat.
although according to madlib, he made his albums with a sp303 (I dont believe that for 2 seconds.)

I prefer the triton studio mane...its jus such a dope piece of hardware....i'm almost scurred to use that badboy cuz of all them features on it mane...for the time being it keeps me in check cuz I used to be a gearwhore and I can just expand the machine to meet my needs sound wise until I decide to step into the world of softsynths and vsti's. The only thing I dislike about it is the sequencer but my mpc takes care of that tough yowee mane.

the asr has better synthesis capabilities. the triton can't touch transwaves, and that waveboy shit is dope too.

Why do people post about things when they don't know what they are talking about? Just because someone asks directions, you don't need to answer simply because they rolled down their window.

The ASR-10 doesn't have any sounds in it so "the sounds in the ASR-10 are lovely" comment at the beginning of this post should nullify the rest of it. As far as the ASR-10 has its own sound, it simply because of the fact that it's an older system with 12 bit sampling which gives it some grit. Otherwise, the ASR-10 is an empty slate. It has no internal sounds and therefore is not really comparable to the LE. If you are looking for a synth with internal sounds, the ASR-10 is the wrong choice.

dog I have a stack of "FACTORY SOUNDS FOR THE ASR-10" on my desk next to it right now, IT COMES WITH DISKS AND ENSONIQ MADE SOUND DISKS AND SOLD THEM THATS HOW IT WAS BACK IN THE DAY. IT AINT LIKE THE MPC WHERE THEY MADE A SET AND THAT WAS THAT< YOU COULD BUY NEW SOUNDS FROM THEM FOR IT. its more a pseudo synth, which is (I think) what dude was getting at.

not unlike the yamaha tx16w which many peeps have assumed (correctly) that although it could sample, the intentino was to use the sounds they gave you on disk and sold you aftermarket and load them into the sampler (basically a synth), this is why the origianl TX16w os makes sampling so hard, it wasnt meant to do it it was meant to be more of a synth that hardcore users could sample with (this comes from one of the dudes who wrote typhoon off the typhoon site or one of the support sites for it) and I am inclided to agree, the asr10 took this idea a step further and blended the "semi synth/sampler" into a user friendly gadget.

plus the efx on the asr10 BURY the tritons, but this is all opinion, I suggest you listen to enter the wu again, 100% asr10 work on that album. triton? listen to eminiem's second album, thats almost all trition.

you are right about the asr-10 having no sounds......but you are wrong about the asr-10's sampling functions.......the asr is not 12 bit....but you can change the sample rate...not the bits though...they go real low....thaz what creates the grit........

Actually the ASR-10 has a 16bit sampler, not 12. And its the 16bit sampling engine and just the type of ADCs in the ASR-10 that give it its sound. The sample rates that you can choose betweent are 30 and 44.1khz.

Also FOO, yes the ASR does come with some factory sounds but that is hardly what people are talking about when they talk about the "sound of the ASR-10". When people discuss the sound of the ASR-10 they are talking about its input/output ala the MPC3000 etc. Those disks that come with the ASR-10 are wack and completely useless.

The effects on the ASR are excellent and I have used many of them in various productions. I can't speak for the LE effects but I do have a Triton Stuidio and the TS effects blow the ASR out of the water.

For the record, I've owned an ASR-10 since they were put on the market. I bought one when they were like 6 months old.

Firstly, for the record, I could give a damn about what you doubt or don't doubt.

Am I trying to play mind games?!? It's called a friggen correction jackass. I saw that I put 12 and said "actually, its 16 bit". To be honest this thread is filled with either bad or completely wrong info. And now you are acting like I'm the one when I've been doing nothing but damage control from the onset.

From the vintagesynt.com:

<<<< The ASR-10 stands for the Advanced Sampling Recorder - a completely digital music production studio. It's a 16-bit sampler that came in both keyboard and rack-mount versions. It shipped with 2 MB of sample memory which could be expanded to 16 MB for a few minutes of stereo cd-quality sampling time.>>>>

Fromt the original Ensoniq press release:

<<<<The ASR-10s (list $2995) Advanced Sampling Recorder with SCSI provides you with a complete digital production studio. These high-quality samplers integrate an effects processor, a MIDI sequencer, and a digital tape recorder -- all in one easy-to-use instrument. · Sampling -- Create stunning 16-bit samples in stereo or mono, with up to 16 MB of sample memory.>>>>
