Connecting a preamp

It may be a balanced input but it's still not stereo.
Remember a balanced 1/4 is a stereo 1/4 with 2 grounds.
I would suggest that you sample left or right but don't merge the signal since you might end up with some signal cancellation.
One of the reasons a lot of people drums sound off or weak is because they try to sample stereo drums instead of creating a stereo sound field for the drums and they get some cancellation.
Drums always sound best when you remember how a drum kit is setup and how sound interacts.

If I sample either left or right only, won't there be some sound "missing" in the sample? Other samplers I'm considering buying are SP1200 or S950. Would they also let me to only sample one channel? I never realized I can't sample both left and right at once. Is this how you guys work?

I convert them to mono, never had a phase problem, samples both at once, with 3 different samplers, I get the same sound I get on my speakers which have a stereo connection from the TT.

remember most older records were really recorded so they have a sound field.
A lot of later stuff doesn't so that when you get into the left/right cancellation.

no it doesn't mean you can't do it just that you have to listen closely to the results, especially on samplers with built in effects since a lot of them try to create a false stereo effect.

Since I go through a DJ mixer, I can pan the input signal to the sampler either way or keep in center.

I'll do some experiments.

If you pan it left (for example), does it mean that I just can't hear the right channel or that the whole signal goes through the left channel?




ntalec, what is your sampling set-up? Do you use a DJ mixer or a dedicated phono preamp? What brand?

Vestex 06 or Rane TTM54
(they sound different)

Can you tell me how you have your gear connected?

Do you sample one channel at a time or do you use an adaptor (like the one I posted a link to) for 2 RCA cables into 1/4"? What turntable do you use?

I convert to mono using a mono mono mono summing adapter.

The stereo out goes to the adapter from the mixer, since both signals are summed, the 60 only sees mono, but at the DJ mixer I can pan the signal going to the adapter, the 60 doesn't know or care what is going on, it always gets a mono signal, left or right or both added.

The other thing, you wrote that "both signals are summed". What does that mean?

your link. RCA is mono, so you have 3 mono signals.

Summed means the same it does in math, added, combined into one. You've got a good noggin man, use it once in a while, you'll be right more often than you think!
