judging a "beat battle"

i've never been to a beat battle, but i've read about them for years. I don't understand how you can judge a beat battle. I know you can tell the difference from someone who just started to make beats and a seasoned veteran, but once you get past a certain point it's all a matter of taste. It comes down to which beat is "better", but beats are as diverse as all of music.

I want to go watch a beat battle and see how it goes down.

Have any of yall ever been to a "beat battle"? What are your thoughts?
