unless the sample is gonna be solo'd in the song why would you eq it before mixing? there would be nothing to relate it to so you wouldn't know which bits to eq or not to make it fit-

of course if the sample was gonna be solo'd- ie start the song with just the sample and it needs to sound good then yeah you would eq it in isolation as thats what you'll be hearing the sample in...

Last night, I layered my KICK with an 808, and the result was sick. If you want it even harder just compress it. 8)

I assume you are refering to making the kick stand out in a song. I have been away for a long time so for those who remember me what up?
Most people / almost all don't have a clue of how to really use a compressor. So i will give you some advice. Read up on it. Study it. But for those who want a short cut here is one and I will throw you an EQ bone as well. This is a start wont work for all mixes but at least now you have a starting point on your reasearch.
Compressor setting for kick:
1. Ratio 3.0:1
2. Threshold -11
3. attack 1.0 ms
4. release 190 ms
5. markup gain turn it up see what happens. Not too loud or you will be buying new speakers.

Now if you compressor has an autogate set range from 100Hz to 1kHz
I will offten add a L1 or L2 ultramaximizer so that the kick is consistant through the song.

Now for the EQ of the kick:
The Q is how wide the bell curve will be (this is important in the detail)
120 Hz - 190 is where the punch is.
60 Hz is the Bump
so try these 2 settings

Example1 Lo Lo Mid Hi Mid Hi
Gain 3.5 -4.9 n/a 4.0
Freq 60Hz 679Hz - 1994.0 Hz
Q 1.2 0.7 - 1.0

Example2 Lo Lo Mid Hi Mid Hi
Gain 3.5 -4.9 n/a 4.0
Freq 120Hz 500Hz - 1040.0 Hz
Q 1.2 0.7 - 1.0
