MPC 60 pad problem (?) - Double hits

I have an MPC 60, 3.10 OS that hasn't been treated right by the previous owner. (The paint is roughed up, and the tactile switches need to be replaced, I have to do multiple presses to get some of them to register.)

I have a suspicion that something may be wrong with the drum pads. When I hit them, I often get a double hit. (Imagine that short snare roll sound, just a quick tattat.) The probability of this increases if I hold the pad down - and a quick, precise tap will usually get just one trigger of the sample. This occurs on most of the pads, but particularly the lower two rows. Also, if I am playing the pads for a few hours, it starts to occur less frequently (or, my playing style exercises to make it single tap more frequently, I'm not sure which.)

Addditionally, I can't get the samples to trigger at the same level manually as they can with the "full level" button pressed. At best I can get them to trigger at is about 3/4 of it.

Has anyone seen or heard of this before? Any feedback is appreciated.

It takes some time to get used to the pads, this happens to most people at first, then the longer you use it the less it happens until not at all, as you have seen.

The angle of the bottom pads make is more frequent there.

The full level thing might be practice as well, it's not hitting it hard, but fast.

You can also change the velocity to volume rate by percentage.

The manual is your friend, don't ignore him!!

Thanks for the insight. Mine is the only machine of this model that I have used, so I have no reference to compare my experience with.

That's a little relieving. I was worried that the pad sensors were going bad - but since I saw no other complaint of that type (but just that opposite, that the pads on the 60 were really good) it either made no sense or made me the unlucky guy with a rare problem..

I'll work on improving my drum pad-fu and see where that gets me.

You don't even need to think about it, just use it and your hands will learn.

I realized that this condition is normal. I thought my pads were bad at first. You need to increase the velocity percentage to full value.

On the Main Screen, where it says "Vel%:100", change the 100 to 200.
Now your pad hits can reach full level volume.
