an appegiator, breaks down chords and plays the single notes in a pattern. its a common synth feature. So say i play a C chord it will play the c e g notes in a pattern that i can set. They are pretty cool to make diff pads and synth lines.

listen to "clap back" and "new york" by ja rule............granted, they might not be arpegiators used to create those synth lines (scott storch is the shit he might have played them)

BUT............you can use arpegiators to create similar synth lines and get equally as good results........very very very..... easy.
