Is a producer a...

Like was clarified b4, a BEATMAKER can just make beats.
A Producer is one who makes beatz all the way down to the final mix.

I know plenty catz who who just makes beatz and cannot mix/finalize a product. They let the MCs/Singers take of that.

Ok ok...Dr. Dre, he is like the Quincy Jones of hiphop beat making in my opinion. Let him get his bass player, MEL MAN (he was so dope) to dig samples, and Dre. MPC drum programming. After that, he puts it alllllllll together and mix them all!

THAT is producing! You know, you have the extra ear. Give feedbak to you artist. "Naw man if you frill on the hook like that the beat will compliment you or vise versa."

I know alot of catz get sick of Pharell singing on trax, but that is what he does. He just adds himself and sets the DAMN songs off 100% of the time.

That is my take on it...

I am a beatmaker 1st and I am learning to be a producer...well a better one.

I've always taken a producer as somebody who "makes" music, not just plays a guitar or such, but can actually program (or sample, or neither) sounds and make music out of it.

There are DJ's and they spin tracks made by producers (i'm thinking more on the techno/house level).

Course producers has traditionally meant that maestro in the studio controlling the levels and telling the musicians what to do... that's just a different producer under my book (both still called "producer")

I'm not gonna start calling myself a recorder or beat maker... i write songs, i record them, i produce(make) them.

I agree with pretty much everyone...

though, in my opinion, a person that makes beats, records and builds the
song with the artist, but doesn't MIXDOWN the song.... is still a producer.

that is if the person, has the EAR to recognize if the engineer is doin a good job or not.

Not all producers are engineers, probably 50-50 or less

I can make some hype riddems but cant mix down for shyte!! my old manager used to call me frequency killer! i could not hear em, too much highs! and speaker bruka! cause I mash his custom made Tannoys u know them ones with the tweeter inside the Sub.

but i was like 17 then, i'm like 25 now so i have learnt a whole heap but i still avoid mixing down though i have a phobia i phuk it all up so i dont bother i leave de professionals to deal with it now.

Hey, newbie to this forum but not to music, jmo but like someone said earlier The Executive Producer is basically the financial backing most of the time, But in the case of the Games new Album, a ton of different producers worked on the album so Dr Dre being the executive Producer as well as producing some tracks himself, oversaw the whole project as a whole therefore nowadays that is another task a exec producer has to do...

my opinion is that a beatmaker is like a drummer in a band and a producer is like a one man band knowing how to play keys, bass as well as drums and having vast knowledge about music theory.

he is also known as a programmer

a producer gives the artist and song a direction he's sought of like an instructor a producer could be a beatmaker because he makes beats

but you can be in the studio not contribute the BEAT and and give the idea and direction for the track and its considerd producing

The Rza didnt learn Music Theory utill he started doing the sound track for Kill Bill ...... so your saying he wasent a producer till now?

jmo again but you dont just learn from one day to the next, or year, or ever. Music theory takes a long time to master, ive been playing guitar for about 7 years now and i learn somthin new all the time as im sure the rza didnt just learn it for kill bill but then I dont know him personally.....hes tight as hell though, producing since the wu days
