Akai MPC Flash Formatting

What's up everyone? I'm a new MPC 2000(not XL) user. I have an MPC w/ 8MB ROM. I want to Save the OS onto it, as the manual says it's possible. What I want to know is, do I have to format the ROM into partitions? If so, how do I do that? or does regular formating to the ROM automatically create the necessary partitions?
