No problems in a year and a half. It seems that you just got the 4k and you are starting to overworry. Give yourself six months at least and most of the difficulties will be partly overcomed. If you picked up that guide I told you about, you will get to where you want to be quicker.

I believe that the magnetic fields has a major effects on vga monitors is maybe what you are talking about. Don`t sweat the it. Experiment and investigate your powerful tools. But the most powerful tool you have is your mind.

Feline is right always save from data. And on the other hand to add more to this has any user from 60, 3k, 2xl, and 4k ever, ever, ever lost their floppy, Zip, firewire drive and now their internal hard drive data having had a turntable, amp, or unsheilded house speakers next to their sampler, 1200, or mpc? If you have please post. I would worry more about friends and lads spilling beer, adding grime, curtains blocking ventelation, and leaving the equipment uncovered to smoke and dust. The most biggest worry would be some yahoo going into the unit trying to install pieces and drives and not knowing what the hell he or she is doing.

:D

Strong magnetic fields + hard drives = bad news.

Moral: always back up your data.

But then, you'd be doing that anyways, right...?

i hear all that, thanx. i do back-up data, its not the files iam worried about, its the mpc4k itself. but i guess i'll just put my mixer in between the dec and 4k. cheap mixer anyways.

thanx again.

hy dasoof - first off  on the cheap mixer - and question: how long you got your 4k? ... no disrespect - just interested - coz to me this sounds like what happens to many rather new 4k users - myself included ... - after some month i had my 4k i just felt: man my 4k is the masterchief here. i could do music by takin away everything else but the 4k is essential in my setup! if it ever fukks up i could switch all the others off right away too - from synth, to guitars, mixer, fxs and speakers - music, fun and polyphony here would be quite limited!

overally i d say its quite unrealistic that your turntable damages your 4k - dunno with all the mpc heaz inhere and all those turntables plugged into their mpcs i dont remember anyone where it happened ... however i hear ya ... about 1 year ago i been afraid for month here for my entire gear - at a certain point i stopped switchin them on at all ... cant really coment on 4k and turntables - however i experienced massive electricity problems allover ... and sorry if i misunderstood magnetic fields but to me it sounds like the same shit that my marshall guitar amp sended out -if so feel free to read further - if not you better stop and ignore coz it might just make you more afraid and thats not what its for ... anyways here goes:

the place i got my setup in is an old basement where there havent been any plugs. so i had to put some first ... my electrician did that and even though i told him that i ll be putting lotsa gear in there unbelievably he just didnt ground the place!!! ... and hold on coz now its gettin painful ... some months later within 2 sessions my hardly ever used marshall fukked up my lexicons outputs, the virus 1 L+R out, my mackies preamps and 1 huge subspeaker ... an older chorus and a wahwah probably too but i m still not sure when and where they past by ... on all the others i m 100% sure that it was my marshall-ground connection... last but not least my marshall even killed himself and if those days one good thing happened it must have been that!

anyways - to sdramatize - a 2nd good thing happened: my 4k survived without a scratch! ... next to my guitars and the 3 remaining speakers!!! everythin else was gone and my basement rather empty for a while ... it has been grounded imediately afterwards - lexicon, virus, mackie, subwoofer slowly came back in for lotsa wasted euros ... and yes ... with great pleasure i even use a friends marshall again. since then i never got a problem ... so - dunno - if your really afraid make sure you got good ground (and what i ve learned is that even if you got ground there is good and wack ground) i had none at all! ... now i got the best ground ever

but imo its rather unrealistic that you dont got ground (and if so i d strongly advice to plug that turntable out asap) ground is default in every building unless your electrician is a complete wanker (btw: i got ground everywhere too - only the basement where all my gear is in has been left out!) ... but sill - if your afraid - you better check it out - an electrician does it in 2 minutes ... at the end save is always saver - and sometimes it even helps to save some money ...

my conclusion: if in my setup somethin is solid it must be the 4k - ... and if not someone up there must have just watched out for it ... i really dunno - i only know that everythin else was always plugged and switched on just the same and that i used the 4k and all the other gear 3-4 month before extensively without any ground, marshall and any noticeable problem! ... til i switched that marshall on - and yo ... you know the rest ...

good luck with your 4k and bangin beaz

... and putting a mixer next to your 4k is always a good idea ... if not a must ...

ive set my zip disks from my mpc2xl on top my turntable, and nothing bad has happened.

But, ima stop doing that :D

But id be more careful with your speakers if anything. Even though mine are "shielded" they still make my monitor bend. So i dont keep them near it. But if its doing that to a monitor, no sense in risking a beat.........so dont set your disks ontop of the monitors.......

What about lots of cables? i know you can end up creating an electro magnet if you wrap cables around like maybe a metal desk leg? could a pile o cables **** up a disk? Not that im setting disks on my cables, but ya never know!

haha
i need to make sure, coz the 4k dident come cheap for me.

and Altopiano, wta do u mean by ground?

By Altopiano Wed Mar 09, 2005 1:50 am
yo dasoof - ground - aint it english? ... damn, sorry my english really sux ... i try again - my dictionary now gives me grounding - is that better? ... doesnt sound much different to me so i try again to avoid misunderstandings ... hopefully! ... not that i m a pro in housholdelectronics either ... anyways - i ll give my best

basically any electronic gear (be it any householdgear, television or electronic musicinstrument) should have 3 cables within the power cable and usually has - one is positive, one negative, and one for the ground ... the third one (ground) basically is only there to avoid that gear sendin out overpower (english? ... if not - sendin out too much current or too high voltage, or too strong signal!) does what it did in my case - damaging somethin within your building that is plugged on (could be a television or a toaster in an other room too) ... in order to do so the overpower gear has to be plugged to a source which is grounded ... in my case the entire building was grounded - the basement hasn't been - (it is now - go figure) ... so if it were grounded that time - and my marshall sended out overpower - there were a power failure (again a dictionary translation) and not much more would have happened except that for a moment there werent any current ... i would have switched it back on and everything were back to normal! ... in my case the marshall sended out overpower - and due to the fact that the basement hasnt been grounded - no power failure happened - and nothin was back to normal! my lexicon murmured (and again the dictionary is useful), my virus murmured, my mackie murmured and one speaker was just silent! the overpower basically just spreaded out and damaged gear that was plugged to my mixer. strangely not my 4k though - big up for that - must be a monster for real!

however - as long as you live in a normal building in a civilized area this really should never happen except your electrician is a fool ... hope the shit is clearer now - if not hit back and i ll try again ...

but now i got a question too: as i said in my first post due to my **** up english i m not sure bout the term magnetic field and my dictionary doesnt help out here either. is it the same thing as i experienced here and just described? .... or did i go completely out of topic? ... if so sorry for the confusion ... however i ll be buyin a turntable soon and would like to know now ... yo and live would be sooooo much easier if we talked italian

peace and bangin beaz

ohh ok
yeh all homes in london have them three things on their plugs. i dont really think my electricity fukkin me up is really an issue for me to worry about.
