On the verge of buying a 4k....Sorry if asked somewhere before...
Can you use the s/pdif connection to go out from the 4k to an outboard effects unit and back in? I guess on a send and return basis.
Also, if you can, could you be using the analogue outs (with the expansion board added) at the same time as send'n'returning via the s/pdif?

Good question. I'm afraid you can't use the s/pdif ports like that. You can sample from the digital input, and the s/pdif output simply delivers the signal that is sent to the main L/R outputs.

I just tried to assign the digital output as an effects send output, but it didn't work (and I have the s/pdif board installed). So if you want to use t he digital output to feed an fx unit, you'll have to use the main output as an fx send, and use the separate analog or ADAT outputs for your normal tracks. That should do the trick, though I admit I haven't used the s/pdif output yet.

I wouldn't know though how to handle the return of that fx unit. I don't think I can mix in the s/pdif input with the rest of the tracks when not in the record page. Haven't tried it though.

On the MPC 4000, you are only able to hear the Input's when in the Record Page.

Once leaving the Record Page, then the IN's cut off. What you can do , is use
it as an FX send and then use the Record Page to record the fiinal mix of everything being
sent to the FX and then coming back to the MPC. Kind of like recording the "Main Out's"
but but just doing it wtih all the returned signals coming back.
