I just never got atached to my creations.

I charge $0 since I already have a job, and would've made the track anyway, I'm just glad to see my shit get used.

i go from $100 to $250 for people just on the internet. cuz its good cash and im not gonna track out no beat for them so why charge alot. but i just sold a beat to some people in california for $315 and i tracked it out and everything. but they are on a label and have a good budget. but when i do my first work for a major label artist im not gonna charge real high. im gonna go $1000 a beat until i do about 4 or 5 beats for major people then im gonna jack the price up to about $5000.

i've never "sold" a beat to anyone. anytime that i've worked with someone the agreement has always been 50/50 with the rapper/rappers. any costs (pressing cds, shirts, flyers etc) and any profits are all split 50/50.

the only work that ive done that has been different about payment etc. is i did the beat for sage francis- makeshift patriot. the only "payment" i got from that was 150 7"'s from www.hiphopsite.com who pressed them as promo. i sold a bunch of those and made some money but that song blew up like crazy on the internet and has been on Epitaph records "punk-o-rama" or whatever its called cd-compilation= LARGE distribution. and it was on the "makeshift patriot EP" on vinyl. i kind of got the bozack on not having publishing on all that. but its all good, just getting my name out there is cool.

i would definatly recommend working with the artist and doing a whole project with them and split everything 50/50. its a pretty easy way of dealing with it.

You made makeshift patriot? Damn, I don't know how many times I've listened to that track. Probably in the hundreds now.

$400 for local dukes.. a grand for the major minors. Only because their making money off my beats when they perform.

$500 for local peeps/ crew.


1000 for peeps from different areas(in state)


haven't had any offers from lables with big budgets.

i see that alot of people are talking about charging prices in the thousands for Major artists, just curious what artists these are?

No I'm playin. My range is from FREE to $100. Depends who it is.Haven't made money this second but I'm finishing some beats now and then I will get paid for the first time soon.

alright, let me ask this question...do any of you have entertainment lawyers or managers? i mean some of yall are talking bout contracts and shit, so i'm assuming y'all are either like jayz said "didn't pass the bar, but i know a lil bit" or you got lawyers/managers dealing with that. just curious, cause i've just been doing free shit for folks around the way, but i wanna start shopping beats around for real.

You can find a generic beat contract on the net somewhere. In fact, use the search and you will find one posted in this Biz section a while ago.

Here in Sacramento Ca, I usually charge somewhere between 200 to 800 depending on the artists. and thats being reasonable!!!

I haven't sold one beat yet.But it's not a big deal because i'm still learning.It's hard to make the switch from emcee to producer.So maybe when i finally get this down and everything sounding right i can get out and start shopping beats.Even work with some local cats.

I once worked for a label that wanted one of my tracks, I remember the price was 750cnd for the whole track or 500 + 7.5% of sales over cost (mechanical rolalties), dunno never went through with it, there where other deals going though that lable that wheren't at all that honest and in the end I backed out, now these are "underground" teky house tracks not hiphop, I'm sure the price varries between music styles/markets, a mid range house producer = $500-2000, big producers 2k and up per remix, but err superstar top 40, well I know of one that does regular songwriting for Briney Spears among many others, he got one mill upp front all rights sold for a song for a top 40 Superstar (I'd rather not say who), of corse there are mad exspensis involved ,flying to studios, hiering musicians, enginers staff ect but the song reached top 10 on billboard like almost everything the guy does for that act .. sorry I'd feel I'd be betraing information if I give out names along with these figures...

in the Techno/House seen, there seams to be a: take what you can and run rule to follow, as many acts never see a dime of their roalties and are better off just gettin a uppfront payment, but of corse if you think you've got a hit on your hands roalties are they way to go..
