desktop computer - $1000
m-audio firewire soundcard - $300
m-audio keystation pro 88 - $500
m-audio bx-5 monitors - $250
akai mpd16 - $250
cubase/ableton live - $300
sampletank - $300
sonik synth - $200 (sampletank upgrade price)
propellerhead's reason 3.0 - $400
spectrasonic trilogy (bass module) - $300
spectrasonic stylusrmx (drum machine) - $300

total ----> $4100 (buy online so you do not have pay taxes)

before you shoot this setup down, do some research on it.

lets compare it to a hardware setup up.

mpc1000 - $900 (*)
mpc2000xl (loaded) - $1300 (*)
mpc4000 (loaded) - $2800 (*)
mixer (at least 16 channel) mackie - $850
yamaha motif rack - $900
korg triton rack - $1300
roland fantom rack - $1350
computer - $1000
m-audio firewire soundcard - $300
m-audio bx5 monitor - $250
audio software - $300
midi control - $200
m-audio midisport - $150

(*) pick which mpc

just do your homework and decide but the software setup with mpd16 is a very bad boy. compare and see for yourself.

how would you put you music on cd or create mp3 files? a computer for $1000 could/will handle all you recording and burning cd or creating mp3 files. [/quote]

Burn on the DPS24,
Thats a 24 track recorder with mastering and options to burn the CD to wav.
Great machine sweet sound
To be honest a computer will give you what you want but the DPS will give you more for less.
A computer with software and audio card with good mic pres will cost you up to 2'gs
and a year from now be worth close to nothing.
Buy gear that keeps its value so you can sell it and upgrade when needed.

This option keeps you out of the computer realm which some people like and will give you Pro results.
No hassle with software.
Ut its up to you. Some people like DAW recording. I use Cubase on a MAC but I owned the DPS24 and if I only had 4 peices this would be it.

But I'm sure theres lots of options and opinions.

Good luck!
