it doesnt matter what sampler you use...

it all comes down to what samples you put into it. you need dope records. it all comes down to the records. (well not all but the majority).

true......but having a good sampler inside your sequencer is a bonus, cause dealing with midi and saving your beats in 2 differant spots can be a pain in the azz(if you have an external sampler).

but if your talkin like a sp303, madlib is living proof.

Filters for me is a big thing though, cause it expands your ability to really layer samples and get more use out of em, instead of having to do it on a mixer or whatever later.

But its how you use your tools.


I would not say that your beats are all on the records entirely, cause you can flip any corny record and make something hot.

Its the skills most importantly, and developing your ear on what to sample, and how to flip it-how to match sounds, and combine them using your tools, whether its a shitty sampler, a 4 track, or a seemingly useless record....... its how you put your shit to gether.

Although ideas are a huge part of the outcome of a final product, the tools used to create that final product are equally important. From a regular standpoint true, an individual can make the exact same beat on an MPC, ASR, EPS, Fruity Loops, etc.....I thought the same thing some years back. I was rockin some nice sh** on an EPS-16+, but when I copped my MPC2000 I instantly recognized an improvement in playback quality no amount of technique would have brought to my sound without the upgrade. I think the tools used should match the level of competition (relatively speaking within reason) in whatever arena in which you are trying to compete. Of course there will be exceptions as has always been the case.

interface effects me too. And then there are some things like groove and feel you can get with differant equipment....its differant for everyone, cause some people can rock a sp1200, and some people rock a triton le. whatever works for you

I can appreciate what you are trying to say but this does make it sound like the art of making a great track is totally skill-less: great the right records and the track is done.. But totally agree with the underlying message "its not the tools that matter"..

yeah, right now im using the filters on my mpc4000. I like em alot

I also really luv the filters on my emu px7. I wish there was a way to route my other gear into it....they are better then the mpc4k, as far as "warmness" goes?! not sure if thats the right way to describe it, but i can hear a differance, and i like the sound of the emu filters.

But the mpc4k filters are nice, makes it totally worth it, i can really **** up some samples.........really on the mpc2xl, the only thing i felt was holding me back was i wanted more filters.........well i guess keymapping as well.....but thats why i went for the 4k. Im use to the filters on the emu and makin my own patches with just layering and the fitlers.

Just a few days ago i made a nice beat using the notch filter...........i was able to create a verse section just by filtering a loop.........I didnt have to just work with a low end thoery filter (like on the 2k)

but even if i got a sample with some bass to it, usually ill make 2 copys, one with the top filtered and then the bottom....i can create more space, and sometimes slice more off on either. My basslines fit better, and its easier to match samples....sometimes when you got too much of anything, bass, or highs on samples they clash even if they are in key with each other.

Plus i noticed that the 2 pole fitler on the 4k is brighter than the mpc2xl (i think the 2xl is supposed to have a 2 pole?) anyways, i can filter off the top to get rid of static, and it doesnt hinder the brightness of the sample as much as the 2xl did......

for the record....that annie sample is not dope, in fact it is rather annoying if you ask me

Nah man, making something off of the annie record into a hit, that's dope. Can't say I'd want to listen to it a lot, but that's an ill sample to use in a track, very out there.

45 king is dope. And at the time, i didn't care for the "hard knock life" song. But I also didn't know what production was at that time either. If you ask me, the track was nothing but "on point" with what Jay-Z had to say and everything and also with the title being "Hard Knock Life". DUH!!!

I think after this song was when people started to get a little carried away with having the voices of young children on their Hip-hop songs. But now we've got something even worse to worry about. Gimmicky Gangsters.
