oh......and

sampling trains my ear.

keys trains my brain.

They complement each other.....I can match samples better, i know how to make basslines and finding the scales just by knowing the root notes, etc. and

im just starting to have a better sense of the keys to where i forget about theory and just jam and rely on my sampling skills (ears) but with the keys! ya know!

I use to think interpolating was hard, but with a little practice it really isnt.


But i agree with classics last post. Playin and producing are 2 differant things......

Pretty much, im saying that they were born with a predispotition to play music. Just like some people are born with certain talents to do things well(mathmatics, athetics etc...)

Now keep in mind that they also were lucky enough to be in the right situation where that talent could be nutured. But you cant just take any 2 year old and teach them how to play the piano or compoase like mozart of beetoven. THey had that natural abiltitity already with in them to create music.

I have friends who are smart as hell but they never had that talent nutured so they dident reach their full potiential. SO pratice is just as important.

I want u guys to see that just becasue u take gutiar lessions for 50 years doesent mean u will get anywhere near as good as eric claption. IT dosent work like that.

U can start a kid playing basketball at 2, so u think thats going to make him as good as micheal jorden, jordan had that natural abilitity and drive(as well as a combitnaion of other talents,leadership) within him. U cant teach that stuff, only develope it

Like i said i dont pretend to know everything but i have ALOT of experince with this, to many people think that taking piano lessions etc.. is going to make them a better producer. YOu have to have the ear in the first place

i have to agree... you can be techically sound but if the raw talent isnt there then ur azzed out...

I think 99% of people who try do get into hip hop production have no talent or skill what so ever.(sampling or composing)

Most of that cats just wanna make beats for money and get famous. u can tell when u listen to their music.

Most people(on this forum and other places) that are producing hip hop shoudent be tryin to make music at ALL.

Part of doing something creative is being honest with yourself, and i think alot of cats are not honest with themsevles and their talent. Everyone thinks they have the abilitity to be the next DRE, or Just blaze.

I think we all forgot about "passion" or "love" or "dedication", "ambition"........that can compensate for lack of talent..........or sometimes even lack of skill......and can lead to improved skill and eventually acquiring both!

Even though you have a valid point classic^^ I dont think that means someone should NOT try, even if they realized "im not that good" because that can be motivation to lead them to something else, and who knows? maybe thats a way so they try harder, and get good, ya know?

Now along those lines, youre right, people need to be honest with themselves, but im thinking more like just honestly doing it because they luv to, regardless of how good they are. ANd realizing they need to do it for themselves, not because they should sound like so and so.

There is also a point where you need to mimic other people to acquire skill, learn from pros, etc. But then need to stem off into thier own.

The people who have passion or ambition for production, will be the one who stick with it..............and even though they may suck for a while, eventually they will be the best, because luv for something will make it happen. You cant compensate for lack of "love for music" but you can compensate for "lack of skill" with love.

its because pyscologically its nicer to tell yourself that even if you dont believe it- otherwise you'd just be telling yourself you had no chance all the time and wouldn't achieve anything...

There is an instrument for everyone. People don't have to be good at only hip hop to have musical ability.

I agree i have only be making beats for 1 year, but my musical ablilitity(in other generes) had definaly helped me progress. I know i aint the best in producer the world but i feel i can hold my own with anybody.(pro or amature)

I think everybody has some musical talent, I mean, you need basic stuff just to talk right, the question of how much or how developed it is becomes very difficult to quantify, and again, who judges who has talent? The realm of opinion creeps in and then we can't get anything clear.

Talent by itself will not get you anywhere, you need talent and practice to really get anything going. Talent makes some things easier but then can make the practice harder because some things don;'t come out as well as other things that do.

Practice is more important than talent, because with practice alone you will get somewhere, but talent alone will not result in anything without practice.

trying to quantify this is next to impossible, and ends up running in circles as you generalize about the talented and the studious, without ever knowing who belongs to which group, unless you base it on opinion.

Naive? More like common sense. Look at all of the different type of instruments available around the world. Just because someone isn't good at flipping samples, doesn't mean they won't be good at drums, or the flute, or maybe harmonica, or singing. You're the one with a limited view of 'musical ability'. There is such a large number of musical instruments which each require unique talents, not just ONE all-encompassing musical ability. Just because someone isn't good at one aspect of music doesn't mean they're not good at another aspect of music. Just because you're good at one aspect of music, doesn't mean you're good at another. Now, are you really going to tell me I'm wrong about that too? Yea, right. :roll: This is something I'm definitely right about.

Take a look at those people who aren't that creative, as you might say. The ones that know music theory up to here. Well, they are talented in the area of music theory aren't they? Those people might be really good at rhythm or discerning what they hear. All aspects of music. That's why I'm right when I say there is an instrument for everybody, because music is not something that requires only one all-encompassing talent. There are many talents involved in the large genre of music. I can argue you into a hole about this if you want.
