QUESTIONS:
Can you link 2 Digi 002 Rack, Mixer units (or combo of both) to provide 16 tracks of simultaneous recording & use an external sequencer (i.e. Akai MPC 2000XL)? (I guess it would be 32 tracks using lightpipe). If so, how do you do this?
ANSWER:
I have done this many times. Or you can sync 2 or more 001s and 002s together Now your going to use midi for the location info. In other words, 'where' are we in the song. And your going to use S/PDIF or ADAT optical to handle the syncing. To handle the midi connection I used a great program called 'midi over LAN' but unfortunately there are some problems with it regarding the 002 and 6.1and I dont have two 002s to test this out so your going to have to use midi on your 002s and your going to have to be the lab rat for us on this one. Connect midi out of one 002 to the midi in of the other. Then midi out of the second 002 to midi in of the other. Also have a session going on each 002. On the first 002 take the ADAT out and route it into the second 002 to ADAT in using an ADAT cable(or you can use S/PDIF). Now hit ctrl+2(on the number pad) on the first computer, click 'Time Code Settings' check 'MTC To Port' then where it says 'none', choose the 002. On the second computer do the exact same thing but also make the Clock Source 'Optical(ADAT)' (or S/PDIF if thats what you used instead) On your transport window to the far left click the 'clock' symbol on both computers. This puts Pro Tools online so that playback/recording is triggered by external time code. And that should do it. Now if you want to mix and monitor like I did create a stearo Aux track on the second computer and set the input for ADAT 1-2(stereo). Put the Aux to 0db. On the first computer route the output on your Master fader to ADAT1-2(Stereo). Hook up your monitors to the second computer and away you go. You can now mix using both systems. When you bounce to disk, do it on the second computer and everything from the other system will also be included on it. 64 Tracks!!! You can also use the extra ADAT channels for sends and returns to verbs etc. Since we used two midi cables you should be able to hit play/record on either system. I hope I covered everything and that it is all clear. Let me know how it works out so we can streamline this and trouble shoot if necessary, then I will create a proper post so that others can do a search and find the info. You can also use 'Remote Desktop' in XP. Set up a dual monitor system on one computer and then set up Remote Desktop to view the other computer. In this way you only have to worry about one mouse and keyboard(Ive tried this and it's great).
