I just purchased a pair of JBL LSR 6328p's they are F*CKING INSANE!!!! Kinda pricey though. You can get the older model LSR 28p's for a reasonable price-under a grand -used. These monitors are very powerful and ACCURATE! In otherwords you can mix records with em and they have tight low bass response. IMO you can't beat em. I also run a pair of yamaha ns 10's as a reference. Don't skrimp on speakers if you want to know what you stuff will really sound like to the rest of the world. The other thing is to think about treating your production room with an auralex kit or something comparable.

big room speakers, or club speakers like the ones you r using usually enhance the sound, mostly in the bass department. whereas studio monitors give you the closest rendition of the actual sound being produced from your mpc/program/synth etc.

yeh it sounds phat on those speakers and you would probly be right using them, but for listening to real sound (eg. no after effects such as bass enhancement or eq etc.) monitors are the go.

but once again, im sure those speakers r phat too!

thanx for your feedback. yes - the monitors i use are really phat. no doubt ... i use them since a year or so. before i used an other pa system from a former band i played in - those speakers been smaller. the days i switched to the hks and played back the tunes i/we did on our pa the hk basses literally been blowin me outta here ... all of our tunes were to retweak but then most things contained to much resampled stuff that sounded quite different on the hks - at the end we have redone little til nothin ... anyways once i got the money together i ll get some good studio monitors - that hk system aint mine - so sooner or later i have to ... thanx

I use a combo of good monitors (PS8s by EVENT) and now I purchased the Sennhiser (HD280pro) headphones this past Saturday and it is making a world of differance in my mixing. If you are going to buy expensive make sure you have a location where you can crank them up because they dont do you as much good being turned down. The headphones I got have a Frequency Response range of 8 Hz - 25 KHz. the human ear can only go as low as around 40 Hz and as high as around 8-10KHz so that more than covers the area i'll be listening to.

the hd280pro headphones are dj headphones and they do not replicate the sound correctly... sure it will make a world of difference when you are listening to your tracks in the headphones but I would not use them to mix... they are great for dj'ing but not for mixing studio work...

thanx aww too - the place i m at i can make really loud music - if i want til 5 in the mornin. fortunately thats the least problem ...

deaf mute or anyone - just whilst we r talkin bout headphones. what about the beyerdynamic dt 990? you know them and are they any better? ... my mate tested em once for his djing and says they are unusable coz too quiet, and the salesperson were i got em told me they for studiowork ... well salespeople talk alot when the days are long but i bought em once when i lived abroad coz i wanted some good headphones. and now in absence of any real ones currently i often doublecheck if i resample or track - once at the huge hks and once at the beyerdynamic. i dont know myself which of the 2 give me a better representation of what i bang out but they definately sound different and i guess using both i m not goin totally outtaspcae ...

I personally get more creative in headphones than monitors, 4 sets of monitors I use for mixing but headphones are what i spend most of my time in. mackies ns10's jbl's and dynaudio's.

I think he caught you out in the sense that they are for studio work, but mainly for musicians, listening to a mix in the headphones while they are recording... I don't know of a single pro engineer, and I've met loads, (I did a degree in sound engineering and have worked in many pro studio's) who mixes on anything else than monitors. Sorry I can't buy it, but you can't get proper stereo representation and frequency representation. Jess Beats, i'm sure you can get more creative cause the headphones give you the impression it's banging like on a club PA, but with the amount of pro gear you seem to have in you're studio (i saw in Pics of your Crib thread) you can't be fooling around with headphones... a. cause it seems like you got a pro studio and pro studio's must have a proper monitoring system in the first place... Dynaudio's????? THEY **** ROCK SOLID / USE THEM, SCRAP THE HEADPHONES. You'll be doin double the work... making it sound tight in your headphones, then doin the whole process over and over when you mix on the monitors... b... if you want to have longevity as a sound engineer, you've got to protect your ears big time or someone else will be doin the mixes when you're 40 and have massive ear damage. When I first started producing, I had shit monitors and I also mixed using headphones (senheisers) and beleive me, they are off the hook when it comes to dj'ing... they are no good for mixing and producing records. I got out of the bad habit of using them when I got good monitors and my mixes translate perfectly on every system now... not with headphones. I can understand why some people use them (cause it gives you the impression it sounds good) but I can't be givin people any other advice than not to use them.. Peace

Spirit Absolute Zero.
NS10 size speakers, but sound great and very cheap.
Out of production, but grab a pair if you can.
Very smooth and accurate for the price, about 90 UK.
Excellent Value.

Transducer principle
Two transducer principles have become established for the conversion of electric energy into mechanical energy: electrodynamic and electrostatic transducers, whereby the latter is only to be found in audiophile systems, due to their relatively high manufacturing costs. Electrodynamic transducers basically consist of a ring-shaped permanent magnet and an oscillation coil, which is fixed to the receiver diaphragm. When an audio-frequency alternating current is passed through the oscillation coil, it is caused to vibrate in accordance with the audio-frequency alternating current, thus causing the diaphragm to vibrate in the same way.

Sound pressure level (SPL)
Due to the impractical numerical values, the sound pressure is usually given as the logarithmic value of the sound pressure level according to the equation: dB SPL = 20 x log (po / 0.00002 Pa). The abbreviation SPL (sound pressure level) is added in order to make a clear distinction from other uses of dB. The reference sound pressure, which is at the same time the threshold of hearing, is then 0 dB SPL. The threshold of pain is 140 dB SPL. A difference in the sound pressure level of 1 dB is just about perceptible, while a doubling of the sound pressure corresponds to 6 dB and a doubling of the volume corresponds to a rise of 10 dB.


Load rating
The load rating is the amount of electric power which - according to the manufacturer´s specifications - can be continuously supplied to a set of headphones over a period of time without causing damage. According to DIN 45500 Part 10, the load rating must be at least 100 mW. Testing is carried out using a special noise signal which is supplied to the headphones over a period of 100 hours.

THD, total harmonic distortion
Total harmonic distortion is a measure of non-linear harmonic distortion and is given in %. Non-linear harmonic distortions are signals which were not present in the original before the signal was converted by the headphones. These unwanted signals are caused by the diaphragm, whose movements do not precisely move in time with the electric signals that cause it to move. Unfortunately, this is a feature of all electroacoustic transducers. Although it cannot be completely eliminated, suitable steps can be taken to minimise it. However, the user is not interested in why this distortion takes place but in how great the level of distortion must be for it to become perceptible. According to the findings of several research projects, a total harmonic distortion of 1% in the frequency range of 100 to 2000 Hz is imperceptible. Below 100 Hz, the perceptibility threshold lies at 10%.

Ear coupling
A distinction is made between headphones which are worn on the external ear (supra-aural) and those which surround the ear (circumaural). Open headphones have foam ear pads that rest on the ears or ring pads that surround the ears. Closed headphones, on the other hand, nearly always have circumaural ear pads.

Contact pressure
The wearing comfort of a set of headphones is determined not only by its weight but also by the force with which the earpieces are pressed onto the ears. This force is given in newtons (N), whereby 1 N corresponds to the compressive force which a mass of about 100 g exerts on a solid surface. The DIN Standard 45500 Part 10 limits the maximum permissible contact force to 5 N. Values of between 1.3 and 4 N are common, although lower values apply for open headphones. Higher values can be found in the case of closed headphones. Here, a higher contact pressure is required in order to achieve sufficient sealing, which is important for the reproduction of low frequencies.

Jack plug
A common audio connector in consumer electronics and music industry. Available in various diameters; in the hi-fi segment, 1/8” and ¼” are widely used. Poles range from one to four. (Examples: headphone jack or jack of an electric guitar).

Connection cable
When one speaks about headphones, the emphasis is on such things as sound quality and frequency response. There is rarely any mention of the connection cable. Most Sennheiser headphones are fitted with an OFC (oxygen-free copper) cable. This ensures linear and low-loss transmission in the broad frequency spectrum of the headphones. Many Sennheiser headphones also have detachable cables, which make it very easy to replace them.

The frequency response of a pair of headphones is given within limits defined by the manufacturer.

Technical data for headphones is irrelevent. SPLs, Freq. Resp. & other data is measured differently with each manufacturer, and there is no standard procedure measuring responses as there is for monitors or speakers.

you stole my words.... Every manufacturer is going to hype there shit cause that's what sells... those figures and measures don't mean isht, and aint gonna make me sweat, beleive, man just AB a mix done on some studio monitors and headphones, then we can talk about figures.
if you want to get fancy with figures I can post my genelec's 1032A'S and genelec's 7070Asub specs and then we can talk aabout real figures. I've had the depate millions of times and it won't make me change my mind.

don't mix with headhones... that's the only advice i'll give any body..

p.s I respect your choice of what you use and why you use it but i also respect my own opinion.
