elmacaco, i use a 4k wich i will keep on using too. switched from a 60 as you know ( ill be having one back soon tho ;) )

By elmacaco Wed Mar 23, 2005 1:44 am
yeah it's all good, I'm not dissing the 4k, I'm glad they keep the MPC line up, and for cats that want a full sampler in their mpc, the 4k is a good move. I'm glad they gave the 4 midi outs back, and the footswitch inputs (the 4k has it right?) all that good stuff. It's just that sometimes akai misses the mark, and it doesn't mean shyt if the basics are left struggling.

Hopefully they will fix these little things, but with so much to keep track of, there may be more pressing needs.

Ikke, yeah, I seem to recall you had a 60. What is it that you miss that makes you want another one?

I was using the 60 just before I checked the forums before turning in, and that question caught me after the 60 high I get!

Alto thanks for your posts! they've are very informative, I didn't know we could shift/swing all tracks !!! whoahahaha ... and YES I think your shift method should enter OS list on a red carpet  , a great great feature to have indeed...

Bleep, Yes great ideas in this thread, where's that list at!?:), but just for the record I think you did it the way akai intended it to be done, that’s USB

The 4k has too many options for it to be as elegant and quick, even with experience, there is too much to choose from, and the screen gets to me, big screen, lots of small writing, although the MV is worse in that respect).

Well I feel you but I have to disagree, the feature set of the 4k could be a nightmare of options or pool of creative tools ..its up the user,

If you are willing to learn these options: they will teaching you in return exploration of music and sound in general,

to put its simply, the mod matrix has revolutionized my sound as a samplist I can program my wav to sound alive,

and after mucking with an XL again the other day, the 4k is way faster in use IMO (Akai did a very Elegant job in ensuring these feature are not in the way of workflow (go anywhere while in play), again this is user opinioned, and is only a valid opinion if the unit is second nature to the user,

the only thing I miss from the old MPC format is the way the fader works for each individual pad, which second to the pads are the are most expressive way to play an MPC (the 4k uses the q links in a multi mode which is good for live and simultaneous control of multiple samples/pads per program, something I clearly missed on the XL) but why akai left out an option of a MPC classic fader mode on the 4k is mind bugging as its so important to the name MPC

No diss on the 60 its brilliant for what it is! as is the 303 just as it is, but a 303 can't sound like a Modular :D ... and yes I know this statement is out of place that its funny :P

yo glide - i ll pass the thanx straightforward to elmacaco - he got me started ...

and elmacaco - np. noone is dissin ... i m glad you like the 60, i like it too - but i like the 4k better ... and i gotta agree with glide - once you know whaz where on the 4k the workflow is real good - all the windows are reachable in little button pushes if ya know how. and imo akai was improving on customer interface on the 4k alot. esp. in the last os releases and i think and hop theres more to come ... yo and to your last question: the 4k has footswitches - 2 of em.

and yeah - probably akai has other things to bother atm. but it doesnt hurt to send in a request ... if its an mpc feature at all. i been searchin for a 60 manual meanwhile. the only one i found at akai international http://www.akaipro.com/int/download/archive_om.html is for os 2.0 ... been browsing over it and according 2.0 the shift amount section seems workin quite the same as on the 4k (... just with different numbers) ... your sure on the 999 ticks shift amount for the 60? i couldnt find it anywhere ... i mean its really much - if on the 60 96 ticks is a quarter than thats about 10 quarters! thats more than 2 bars on a regular 4/4! ... on the 4k we got a lousy 1/16 to shift atm ... but was a nice read though compared to the 4k noia. man - seems theres been a time akai told ya what things are really ment for ... in detail ... and sometimes with practical examples. once i m bored i ll read the entire 60 manual.

then i googled os 3.10 - but thats for the scsi thing only. are there any other ones somewhere inbetween? if so could you point me to them please - if ya know by heart were they changed it - could you also point me to the right one? i couldnt find any others coz i have no idea which 60 os's to search for - ... a search in the 60 forum didnt help me either ...

Yup, 999, 4 quarter notes is 384, so over two bars at 4/4.
I just did some tests to make sure, and yup, if I put a note at the very end of a 2 bar loop and shift it 999, it goes right off the sequence. selecting different numbers gets you predictable results, shifting stuff exactly two bars, just some numbers, etc.

I'm gonna have to play with this more, there's a lot of potential here.

Oh snap! When I go to the timing correct screen, the shift timing parameter there is limited by the quantize!!! with it off you can't shift, with 1/8's you get 23, 8th triplets you get 15, 16th 11, 16 Triplets 7, 32nd 5, 32nd triplets 3!!!!

But in the edit shift timing yu can shift by any number 1-999 earlier or later. I wouldn't be surprised if the 4000 didn't have it hidden somewhere.

It seems the limitation is a convinience so you can shift by one quantization value or less easly, then the edit part is for more serious shifting.

Wow, I love finding out these little gems on the 60, I've only used the TC shift for small amounts so I never noticed the limits, and I'd use the edit for most of my shifts, small or large.

Thanks Alto, thats cool. Now find the unlimited in the 4000, it's gotta be there somewhere, maybe those are not the same screens after all.

first off thanx elmacaco for doublecheckin the 999 tcks. yeah that timing correct window (shift timing - shift amount) is one of the big mpc features imo too. and i see it is a convenience that shift amount is linked to the tc too. but then imo it would be ideal if for example if tc is set to off we had the possibility to insert a higher number ... ie up to 1-2 bars were dope - 3840 = 1 bar, or 7680 = 2 bars ... unlimited were obviously best ... when tc is set to off there s no need to link shift amount to any number imo. man - i can think of sooo many reasons were that could come in handy ...

anyways you say you ve got an edit shift timing feature on the 60 - is it a separate window or a feature on the 60? ... i cant find soethin like this on the 4k ... and i havent found it on the 60 manual either (i only got that 2.0 version and the 3.10 update) ... i m planing to write a feature request and you would do me a big favour if you could point me to where that is explained - that way i could reference an akai manual and i think it were easier that they listen - coz i really think they should give us that feature too ... could you please tell me were i can find somethin about it in a 60 manual? (how many update manuals do you have for the 60?) ... or is it maybe only a bug which you can use to your convenience on the 60? ... yo - and think of writin a feature request to roger - he should allow you to shift all tracks at once too ... thats really dope!

and el ... for the last ikke comments - they pissed me off probably more than yourself ... i m happy you came back on your own ... thanx - i ll ad somethin later.

first somethin constructive for our initial problem and those who run into it in future and dont wanna transfer to the pc. imo there s an even easier way as glide explained above. its similar and you gotta do it track by track too - but imo faster as the move one:

copy your sequence to a new sequence and make it double as long for safety ... you dont even have to setup a locate and its a matter of button pushin only: go to track 1 - go into step edit ... hit copy - then you just gotta set the "copy range" fileld from ie. 001:03:00 to the end of your sequence (turn jog fully right) and the "copy to" field to 001:01:00 (or 002:01:00 do as you like) and press do it and its done for that track. that way your track 1 will get overwritten and its all lined up fine and all the settings you just did will be remembered for the upcoming tracks ... imo its faster as the move one.

on my 4k all of the settings in the copy field are set by default correctly - in case in yours this isnt the case make sure the mode field is set to REPLACE, set PAD to ALL, EVENTS to ALL, COPIES to 1 (i think you dont even have to make the initial double copy of the sequence if ya set copies to 2 here - but i havent tried that yet). for the remaining settings just make sure that from sequence and to sequence are the same and refer to the same track (thats default too)

yo - my coment on the topic is over - the following doesnt have anything to do with it

yo ikke. imo this is a forum in which we should talk about mpcs and music, discuss, and most importantly help each other out. imo coments what other fellas have to do as the one above do not have anything to do in here. for once i ll make an exception and ad a coment too - i hope its the first and last time. your comments above really pissed me off. ... elmacaco is tryin to help us solvin a problem and i and others are thankful for it. ... now we dont have that feature - but who knows - maybe we all together can find out somethin that is missin in our 4k - so that we can write a feature request and if akai listens it can only be good for all of us ... yes - you too - get it? ... i m not saying you havent been helpful but stop with your useless comments. its not the first time you post bull like this ... we really got plenty nonsense, RTFM and nob threads goin on here everyday - the amount of interesting threads is really not much - so let those few interesting threads go on and get the fukk outta them if ya dont have anything to contribute ... if you wanna talk about nonsense and ish i m sure there lotsa better places ...

yo and now i m tryin to be helpful and i give you a hint: you say you had a 60, now you got a 4k, a few weeks ago you wanted a realtimestretching and vga-output-havin mv to switch with the 4k ... in case ya dont remember ... http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php ... c&start=75 ... now you want a 60 coz of the pads .... sorry for the question: ... are you for real? ... not that i care what and how much you use but i d say get your mind clear and solve those problems first ... and most importantly - let those guys that are helpful be helpful!

yo ikke - to me this matter is over here and now! ... be sure that i wont reply to any coments of yours to the matter within this thread - i have seen how that turns out ... but - i ll forget about it for any upcomin one! over for me!

peace
