mpc-60 as midi controller what's the easiest setup?

Ok here's the thing I may not be working on a song at the moment, say I'm setting up drum programs in a rack sampler, the 900 or 1000 or maybe just goofing and playing around with sounds in modules too but I would like to use the 60 as a controller instead of my keyboard. I also want to work out how the sounds mix and balance between say, the program I have loaded in the 60 and the stuff I've sampled into the rack machines without going crazy changin this menu an that menu.

I want to have a simple like "work method" that's consistent so I can start forgetting about learning all the technical stuff a bit and get down to music.

So, I'll set upthe 60 with a program of kiks and snares and toms in bank A, no problem. But What's the quickest way to get it to talk to the rack stuff through the a-d midi ports as a default at the same time. I have the 1000 on port 1 an the 900 on port 2 and I'l set it up so I always use bank B and C for them so I'm consistent. I want to be able to just switch banks and play either the 60 internally, switch to bank B, plays s1000 cymbels etc. Without having to change menus, turn local on/off an whatnot.

I was thinking, make a default program and sequence which has 2 tracks for the two midi ports defined but don't assign any sound to the pads in those banks - keep the local sounds on bank A, that way I could play the external samplers with Local set to ON because they don't have any sounds assigned to them? If I have a sequence like this though I would have to switch tracks that I'm workin on even if I changed to the bank for that external sampler.

aaiii... makin myself confused I hope somebody know what I'm tryin to explain. Maybe I'm makin something complicated that doesn't hafta be.

Yeah it's a little kludgey,

You need to switch tracks and define the midi channel. If oyu have no sounds assignd to the pads then there is no need to turn local off. No way to just switch banks and have it be a different midi channel.

I control stuff from the 60 all the time, and I have full banks, so I do switch local on off and drum to midi quite often, not a big deal once you get used to it, one good thing to do is to name your midi channels, then it will say Midi 1A-S1000, Midi 2A-Emax, or whatever.

Learn how the 60 does things 99% of the time it is the best way, and if you learn it you will have more flexibility than if it worked how you wanted it too. It's like your scarf contribution, it contributes what it has, it is up to you to use it to your advantage.

ha ha your right it's really not so hard I don't why I thought it was such a big bother. All I did was make a sequence named scratch and then made tracks 1 an 2 talk to midi ports 1 and 2. I'll set up my programs in the 900 and 1000 to be triggered from banks 2 and 3. Voila an whatnot. I'll just rename the sequence when I want to do something to save. yay I'm getting the hang of this.
