i was thinking about gettin a new computer mostly for music. i always hear people talking about the g4 and how good it is for recording. can someone tell me why and if the g4 is a good choice

If u wanna compete or even have your stuff sound like the big boys (if u have that skill) u need a MAC.. I have PC and I wish I had a MAC instead..

what is so good about it tho

Quality of electronics in a MAC. Quality of graphics and sound.
The Digi is awesome if u check the specs of it.

Of course I would miss my Vegas Video as my mulittracker but I would get over it.

The MAC is a better machine period if you compare all the specs of similar PC's.

Ulimately you have to decide for yourself after doing a little homework on the subject. And MAC is more expensive but then again quality doesn't come cheap..

I DO NOT USE PRO TOOLS, IF I did, I would be hard pressed to get a mac. I have seen people I know with a mac and a PC rig for PT and the PC rig always outperformed the mac rig when similarly configured.

The mac one (this is what they both told me) crashes a lot less though, ie is more stable a platform to work with.

A AMD system that is as powerful as a G4 will cost you several hundred dollars less.
AIFF's (the mac audio storage medium) is a pain to work with since most stuff (IE the MPC) deals with wav files. if you got the mpc program editor for mac no big deal with the mpc but do the triton accept aiff's? I dont know but Id bet it dont. A lot of gear uses only wav's or a proprietary format, so if you want to download and use sample cd's and stuff be aware that you will have trouble editing them on the mac, it adds an extra step.

just things to consider.

DO you edit samples in the pc (easier) or on the gear? if its on the gear then a mac wouldnt pose the "aiff/wav" issues at all.

DO you like the feel of a mac over a pc? (this is the main issue, someone who likes a pc can get a mac, but if they dont like it they wont be at thier best on it AND vice versa)

DO you want to use a laptop? if so get a mac hands down, PC laptops are giant POS for audio work. (note if you are gonna do audio on a laptop, no games and no internet, so remember that you dont want to get one for "school and music" its just not feasable.

i have a Custom PC and it work's just fine for music (jus as fine or better than a mac)
It's the component's that count
if you are serious about dis music
get a digi 001,digi002,or digi002rack and a powerful mac or pc!!!!

some advantage's of a mac as compared to a pc is plugin software compatibility(BUT WAVE's is PC Compatible<<<<I think it's only a matter of time before other plugin companies notice that alot of people use pc's for music and start making window's compatible software)

The advantage of having a PC is you can alway's upgrade it with a fast processor etc.(with mac's you have 2 buy a whole new computer if you want to upgrade)

also you can build a custom pc that will kill a mac for less than $1500 or even less than $1000 brand new
a mac will cost in the $2000 range

don't get me wrong mac's are what they use at all the big studio's but pc's can be just as effective!!!!!!!!!!

No doubt, I have an AMD, Win XP sytem and it treats me very nice. I am very happy with it. I use sound forge, vegas video, cool edit pro, awave and a million plugins along with tracks. I got an ASR10, MPC2kxlse2 and a triton classic. I have never had a MAC but I play on my friends MAC everyime I go to his home studio and I like it alot. And yes MAC's don't crash as nearly as much as PC's do. I built my own PC specifically for what I do, music. MAC's are for the big money spenders cause alot goes into upgradin like you said, PC'a are a VERY good thing to get into but if I could I would have both. a well built AMD PC can kill a MAC though I know that for sure, I made mine !!

its been said but i will say it again. do you like the feel of a pc or a mac better. pt on a pc is fine, i use it on a mac. i prefer the way macs work versus the pc. we have two pcs in the studio i work at and we use them for giga studio and vstack, both are strictly instrument pcs meaning that we only have sounds coming out, not in. everything goes to the mac to track, edit, mix, and master. as i said i like macs better just mainly cuz of the g.u.i. and the way the sysem works. pcs treat me like a baby and is always poppin up stupid stuff to help, or sending my files in places i dont want to. i am sure there are ways to get around it all but i dont even want to learn. i dont like pcs. thats me though. if you like pcs versus mac go that route. u will be able to do just as much on it as you will on the mac. for cheaper too. you can build a screaming pc for under a grand. good luck.

thanx alot for all the help everybody. i do my roughs on the mpc then edit it in the pc. but i was thinking about gettin a laptop so dr. foo. u def. answered my question. i have a audiophile soundcard and it works good but my computer is starting to piss me off so i might go with the mac laptop. another question tho, i pretty much just started makin beats like 6 months ago. i love sampling from records but sometimes it can be a pain in the ass finding certain sounds. by the way i am working with a mpc2kxl a behringer mx1604 a turntable and soundforge. i been kind of broke lately but waiting for a big check in the mail. wut are some equipment that can help me out. thanx alot this website helped me out 1000 times better than that retarded manual
