Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

go ahead and drop a tip/technique that you use in the process of your production on the mpc2000xl... go ahead and post any kind of tip... don't be shy about posting a simple tip... cuz it could even be that veteran user overlooked it...
.
here i go....

my tip: when doing complicated drum patterns using the kick...i rehearse the pattern with two hands.. one for the kick... the other hand for the snare... doing complicated patterns is easier with two hands for me...
.
moving along... knowing that its best to record the kick and snare on their own tracks..... this is what i do....
.
when i comes to recording.... that complicated pattern.... if i want to lace the kick part... i would use both hands like i did in the rehearsal BUT.... instead of my right hand tapping the snare pad.... MY RIGHT HAND WOULD TAP SOMEWHERE ON THE MPC METAL COVERING... for example, my right hand would tap somewhere near the rec gain and master gain knobs... while my left hand taps the kick drum pad... since for that track... thats what i want to record...

shitt works for me....

i've done the same thing but sometimes don't get the results i want so i'll do the whole drum pattern on one track then i'll copy the track then erase what i don't need on that track then repeat that same process untill i have my kick sanre and hhats all seperated. it might seem like a long process but it works for me.

Hey,

I do that same things like tapping on the metal part and seperating the drums by erase/copy.

Give me some of those sample chopping tips. I can chop if i want to use a one or two loops, but eight or more loops I'm no good. I want to chop and program like that dude who put that mo money track together for biggy or sumtin. I just got recycle 2.0 last night thinking it would help. I haven't tried it yet.... but holla at ya kin folk.

My tip... i drink an bunch of freshly brewed lipton Ice-T before I start to produce... It keeps me crunk

as far as chopping.. while the vinyl is playing i look for at least one bars worth of a loop...i'll sample the general area the loop is in,into my mp...
trim the edges to it flows smooth... for all my one bar loops... i chop them into a maximum of 4 equal pieces...

one tip for people using fruity loops ( i know iknow lot of people think that's a piece of s*** ) anyways , i use the slicer on this program to make one shot samples from loops where it's impossible to have nice cuts , with the " fill the gaps " function , you get some random reverbs , it's really non- professional and weird sounding ( i think that's what i love , knowing that it will feed my good samplers !) but it works great if you like dirty things .just pick the sounds you like from the loops and sequence with the mpc .

Sometimes when Im making complicated drum patterns I will have problems getting a hit to fall where I want it to, like in between a kick and snare. So I will slow the tempo way down, put the hit where it is needed and then speed the tempo back up.

I know this has been talked about before on here but I just started doing it more...Doubling up bass hits with one of em's frequency turned down to 10-20 fattens that biatch right up. Other than that, I do that tapping on the mpc's shell trick which is a good one...thought I was the only one who did that

.no doubt... if i have a sample programmed flips out the whole beat... i would sometimes link that sample sample to another pad... with the freq don't to 10-20.... like you did... to add bass....
.

.also another thing i learned just yesterday... leave the freq at 100 or whatever is desirable for the sample on the second... have those same samples on both pads linked... and on ONE OF THEM TUNE IT TO 1 INSTEAD OF 0........WOW!.... NICE FLANGER EFFECT... ITS SOUNDS CRAPPY IF YOU GO PAST TWO....

i havent any tips that mpc tutor or Mr Goins hasn't covered already so cant offer anything new-

but if you use sound forge you can utilise the built in fm synth to make your own sub basses real quick...

just select one operator, set the time to about 2 secs, set the frequency to whichever note you require:

A
55.00

A#
58.27
B
61.74
C
65.41
C#
69.30
D
73.42
D#
77.78
E
82.41
F
87.31
F#
92.50
G
98.00
G#
103.83

press ok and you'll have a pure sine tone at the note you want, you can now use volume, distortion to boost and phatten the wave, enveloping to have it decay, hell you could even copy that env shape for a pitch dive....

eq, compression, verb to taste...oh and to keep this mpc orientated- put the wave in your mpc to thicken your bass sounds or use in its own right....

Being that there are so many technical things that you have to keep weary of while producing on the XL, I find that when I smoke, I get slightly careless (copy the wrong phrases, forget what sounds are on what disks, lol)...however when im zooted I'm able to find samples in my records that I would have never have found otherwise. My SUGGESTION? if you chief...smoke AFTER you have laid down your beat....turn your speakers up, vibe for a bit, and then add whatever edits you want.

My tip (from the beginner), I guess is discipline. Having the standard 20 sec mono sample time, and no zip disk, CD rom or any of that crap...I have limited samples i can use, so i sample sounds/loops, save them onto disk, load that disk into my computer and cut/copy/stretch/filter/amplify these sounds in COOLEDIT until they fit with the drums that I have laid down. Then I bring em back into the MPC...save's memory...and is more precise. Then of course I can adjust the MPC start/end points accordingly. I just started...and its amazing what you can do to a sample...erasing all traces of sample evidence.

I wish i could share my songs....but I cant figure out how to upload my beats..they all on cassettes and floppy disks.

I use Sound Forge to make many of my fat synths, and sinewaves. I also load my WAV's through sound forge and EQ maybe more polishing using many different plugins/ ultrafunk, waves, canam, Hyperprism to name a few.. Like Dub said, sound forge makes super clean sinewaves, cool edit pro does the same thing for sinewaves. I save the wave back to ZIP then load to my MPC and I have perfect sounding samples to play with.

I also sometimes use the click and crackle remover in sound forge (it's in the noise reduction plugin pack) to take out static from vinyl samples. I works perfect resulting in almost like 99.9% of all crackle removed.

now this one has been completely plagarised from akaizone...

you can make a psudeo high-pass filter effect on the mpc without the second filter board if you-

put the sample into sound forge- invert it (i think its an option in tools) the put both samples back into the mpc- layer them up so the inverted copy plays at exactly the same time as the uninverted copy (this wont work unless they are triggered at exactly the same time) you should hear silence when they both play at the same time....but if you grab the filter cutoff on the original sample and start turning it down you should hear the top end of the sample creep in.........

works on the s2k and im pretty sure ive done this in the past on the mpc....either way have a go....
