Playing samples on pads in "Gate" vs continuous

I don't wanna sound like a dummy, But when I assign a sample say a 10 second sample to a pad, How do I get it ONLY play as long as Hold the pad down? Like "Gate" vs continuous or having to wait for the sample to play all the way through. I hope this doesn't sound confusing. I just want to have more control over sample. Example: Take the Phrase or sample "I represent".
I want to be able to tap the pad 4 times holding it down on the 4th tap so it says, "I, I, I, I represent"
as opposed to how it is now, I tap the pad once and it plays all the way through.
How do I get it to do the I, I, I, I represent thing.
On my SP-202 it has a button called "Gate" which does this.

You have to change the voice to mono.If you acces the assign screen.Shift+6 go under params and in the bottom right where it says poly change it to mono.

Mono will keep the sound from overlapping but it'll still play the sample to the end when hit, to get the sample to play only while the pad is being held down turn it to NOTE OFF.

Page 126 in the manual.

Or just chop the "I represent" into 2 sections.Section 1:I and Section 2:Represent.THat way you can assign them to seperate pads and put them on mono.THat'll give you the effect you need.
