I know plenty of people who studied in great schools and know their instruments well. Ask to hear their music, you might see my point.
It tkaes something different to express yourself as a musician, you can learn all the technical stuff you learn by playing other people's music by playing your own music (except sight reading, but again, that's for session players, if you are a producer, you are not going for that).
It is a waste of time, an MPC is more akin to sheetmusic and a pencil than a guitar or piano, it is geared to write songs on, arrangements, beats, etc. You need to think in that grand picture sense, and get good at putting your inspiration into the music and sequence. Studying other producers that don't really know much more than you do is a waste. put these guys on a pedestal and try to climb them (or ride them), and you'll never be half as good, just another cheap knock off.
Talk to songwriters, they are hardly ever very good at instruments, just enough to get their ideas down and write good songs. Eye on the prize not on some sucker who's closer to it than you.
well, i dont know much bout PREFUSE73 at all... i was hoping to maybe learn a bit about this guy in this thread, since ive heard his name a lot lately and havent heard any of his music except for the GHOSTFACE and EL P collab... but i can see now that i aint gonna get much info outta this thread...
anyways, as for learning from others... EVERYONE does it, you just gotta use what you have learned and evolve... everyone is gonna sound like their inspiration when they are first learning... that just comes natural...
elmacaco, i got nuff'spect for you and your opinions, you know your chit... i understand what you talkin bout peops who are extremely educated in the music field, but aint really doing much with their "knowledge"... i have experienced it firsthand with some of the instructors ive had in the few music classes ive taken at community college... but seriously, even the great Jimmy Hendrix had people that he looked up to for musical inspiration... one example i have is Arthur Lee, from the band LOVE...
Jimmy was totally in love with Arthur Lee, and you can find a little evidence of that inspiration in a lot of Jimmy's music... do a little research and you will find that Jimmy Hendrix & Jim Morrison were both INFATUATED with Arthur Lee and his band... and they are two of modern music's legends... my point is that EVERYONE has some outside musical influence that is inspiring to them to the point that they want to make their own renditions of music, which of course, in the less advanced stages of progress and evolution are going to sound very similar to the artist which inspired them in the first place... some people progress past these initial stages more rapidly than others, some it takes a while longer... but i dont think ANYONE wants to get stuck in those beginning stages forever!!!
hopefully the point im trying to make is evident... STAY TRUE TO YOUR INSPIRATION, BUT ABOVE ALL, DO YOU!!!
