Perhaps this is true, but that's no reason to give up on an idea like this.
Hip Hop didn't start as a mutli million dollar chart topping genre.
It started on a street corner by people who believed in it.
I don't think anyone in this forum would disagree that sampling is creative.
Are we musicians??
Maybe not, but we do produce music.
We choose the sampler to be our instrument of expression.
I don't think there are many members of this forum over 50 years old.
It's very difficult to convince a generation that didn't grow up with sampling that it is an art form in it's own right.
We do accept it, whats more we embrace it.
I know plenty of 'real musicians' that have slated sampling as stealing etc. etc. but when you play them something like DJ Shadow and explain that how the track was put together with tiny little bits of other records, there's not many that don't appreciate sampling as an artform.
The problem is lack of exposeur, these people hear the cheesy dance tracks that rip off other songs for money and think that this is sampling.
It would be similar to us saying that rock music is Avril Lavigne, therefore we hate rock music.
But this is changing, more and more bands like Radiohead are using sampling in their tracks and it is becoming more accepted as an artform.
We must adopt these licensing laws at a ground level because we are the next generation of music industry people, some of us may go on to become the head of major labels etc. who knows.
These licensing laws don't only apply to music they are pro creativity in every art form.
