copying tracks but..

Hi All,

I hope someone can help me on this one.

Say you started to make a track and you recorded on tracks as shown below.

track1:kick
track2:snare
track3:bassline

What I wanted to know is if you copied track3: with the bass line data on could you copy that to a new track/track4 and change the sound while still keeping the original sound on track3. Basically copy the bass line data to a new track change the sound but still keep the original sound on track 3.

I hope this makes sense.

Yeah piece of p!ss, just copy it to 4. Whatever you do to track 4 now will not effect track3 ...Im presuming you talking about mpc tracks.. but would be true for any multitrack set up..

I think I might try and explain better, i have a 2kxl

I want to copy the bassline data on track 3 to track4: while keeping the bass sound on 3 but on track 4 change the sound from the bass sound to a new sound.

I could just go into track4 and change all the notes to a new pad but the sequence is 16 bars long and it would take a good while, I thought there might be a real quick way.

ahhh, sorry dood thought it seemed a bit simple... I dont know a way to do that unless like ya say change the program/pads..

yeah change the program.....if ive understood and say you had tutors bass sample pack- prg 1 cuban bass sound on track 3 and then the same bassline playing on track four but with a different sound set your program to say prg 2 and then load up the new sound into that program....

i do this all the time with synths- copy the data to a new track but change either the program or the midi chanell- that way i have a duplicated line using a different instrument...

That is exactly what I want to do, duplicate the line, and use a different sound. Though as I don't use programs yet it's no good me doing it your way just yet.

I guess I'll just have to copy the track then go into the track and replace the notes over to another pad with the sound I want.

or in future as I do the bass copy my notation onto a spare coupla tracks and that way I will duplicate it.

By the way the house beats are coming on getting the hang oif the swing and hi hats at last!!!

how can you not use programs? you have to for your mpc to play your beats- before you start getting dirty in step edit copy the program, name it Roundy's2ndProgram or summat- put that on program slot 2....change the program on the copied/duplicated track to program 2-

as both programs are the same and both midi data is the same they will play exactly the same thing, BUT change the bass sound on Roundy's2ndProgram.....et voila....1 tarck is playing opriginal, second is playing same riff htrough program 2 which has a different bass sound...

when you are happy, pat yourself on the back, praise greg for being so lucid with his replies, delete all samples from your second program apart from the bass sound, press purge, rename the second program to something meaningful (ie bassDup) or whatever, set its program change number to 2, set the program change number on the track to 2 and then tomorrow when you play it will already be lined up and ready to go...

when you have got your head round this you will be doing things like writing a beat with one program and then doing the above trick and having a second layer of beat playing a different program- no relly good for hiphop but excellent for house, techno, tech-house, housno and hecky-touse....

this will save you bags of time, when your a bit more speedy it will just be a acase of copy track, copy and rename program, change sound on second program....

of course if you have used 16 levels or whatever to make your program this may not work- but try it anyway, it teaches you a lot of h0ow these things work...

Right let me get this straight.

When I said programmes I meant setting up a programme e.g

Pads 1-16

kick on pad 1, snare on 2, hi hat on 3 etc...saving it all on a disk and calling it house beats 1 or something like that. I havn't created any as yet.

I think what you were meaning there was when you for example copy a sample then going to assign selecting an empty pad/programme then going from there.

Was that what you saying when you set your mpc up to play programmes/drum 1-4?

beats on programme 1
bass on programme 2 etc..

At the moment I am just whacking aload of samples in my mpc mainly beats in bank A and then my loops one hits on bank B.

I'm getting real confused here. Is that what you were explaining?

program four- duplicate program for doubling beat, bass or keys....

On the 60 in the edit (sequence) screen you can change all X notes (samples) to another Y note with a push of a button. The 2000 must have this, I'd be shocked if it wasn't there.
