That used to happen to me. I bought my mpc 4000 without the hard drive and installed mine without formatting it in the mpv 4000.
After formatting the hard drive it worked flawlessly.
The system locks up when there's a blank cd in the drive and you try to access it (the way you would access the hd) without anything saved to the cdr/rw.
