drum programing

damnit i suck at getting my drums down. I use the mpc100. Anyone here got any tips? I could make something simple but its real repetative. Frustraion took over me and i decided to rant in this thread and look like a dumbass by asking for tips.

No Dumb ass Kave,,,,just new to it...

When i got my 1st 60...i was like...'Will i ever get the hang of this' but u know wot...i did....Then it was the 3000...now i'm just acquainting myself with the 1000....

Tip 1) Just Play with your machine...repetitive or not...practice may not make perfect...but it'll sure make 'Permanent'

Tip 2) When you play with your mchine...be sure to have the manual at arms length only should in case u need to consult it...(AND please DO condult it...the manual is your FRIEND...just like Elmo from Sesame Street)

Tip 3) Regular use....Self explanitory really...

Last tip) Have fun goldarnit...shiiiii*...Listen to your fave beats...or a beat in your head...1st work out its tempo...then replicate it...or practice replication...from there...deviate & try new stuff...but get the basics down pat first...

'REPLICATE'...then DEVIATE!!!

good idea about trying to copy drums from other songs. This will probably give me new ideas and stuff.

there are only so many rhythm patterns.

Some like to Do Kick n Snare 1st..(Kool I Often Do This)

Some Perfer the Hatz n Cymbalz....(Kool Also I Don this 2)

Here is the thing If U Fall into the First Category Try the Second or Vice Versa........................

and IF U Do The Kick n Snare on the Same Track WHICH I DO Advise ....
seperate them Later by coping the track n deleting until u have kicks on 1 Channel and Snares on the other......(this Gives U Better Output Flexiblity)

Now also Leave the MACHINE GUN Hatz 2 the Heat Makerz.................
Program Ur By Hand Take Ur Time and don't Use the Full level (Unless Ur Really Goin 4 a Very Electronic Sound)...........................

Also Setup U Quantize Correctly For UR Song..............Play then Listen 2 See if the MPC is Movin' Ur Hits More than U Would Like IT 2 Then Adjust Accordin'ly............................. Some times I Don't Quantize At All it Depends on the Song and the Phrase i Want 2 Create.............

Bongos, Congas, marcas, Hand Bells, Cow Bells, Wood Blocks.......DON'T Sleep................Use Them.................

lay down a snare or twos and fours for two bars, now lay some real simple kick pattern over that, copy these two bars to 8 bars. Now, embellish the 8 bars w/ some subtle additions of snares and kicks that varies throughout the 8 bars.
just be easy and double up the snare to varied effect..puch up the kicks on the one, five and the end of eight...add some sparse hats and the drum track is almost finished. change up the hats or something for the hook or whatever...done.

That's the best tip I've heard on this site. Creating music should not be a hard task, or a chore you don't like to do. Grab some drums, create a bunch of sequences.. play around with em, erase a few, re-sample some drums, grab new samples. Remember, we all have good and bad days. Don't expect amazing things to happen right away. Push yourself to the limits...do different things to get different results. Sample low with the rec gain on high.. do whatever. Just experiment, discover something new. It only takes 1 sound or 1 idea to get your creative juices flowin'!

there is trail and error in drum programming. there are allot of time when when you have your drums programmed and then lay down your next instrument or 2 and the drum do not fit, just reprogram your drums until they fit.

lord, hit the nail on the head "there are only so many rhythm patterns".

learn to reckonize and program these rhythm patterns. learn what is the different between an open pattern (busy pattern) and close (not so busy pattern).

finally, practice is the key. instead of looking to make beats practice programming drums. start with a close pattern and get it groovin (need to feel it in your soul) and then take that same pattern and open it up. always save you work (to see your growth).

now, here are a few drum programmers you should listen to because in my opinion they are some of the best cameo (don blackmon) and d-train (i do not know who programming the drums for d-train). these guys used the mpc series. you may not be into there music but check the drum programming.

i hope this helps but again the key is practice.

listen to some Jel, his drum programming is inspirational.

uses an sp 1200 but the machine used is not important, there's still much to be learned.

if your'e more into groove drums check out dj hi tek, his simple drummings do the trick REAL good. i believe he used an mpc3000 for Black Star
