Madlib in Scratch

Just got the new Scratch magazine and read the Madlib interview.
Not to open up this can of worms again, but I found it interesting that he says he'll sample from comps, re-issues, whatever. Interesting coming from someone with his digging "cred."
Thoughts?

well if i couldnt find a record, i have no problems buying a reissue or if a record was outta my price range, reissue here i come again i mean cmon there really is no rule against this at all just make music

Saw the man himself while digging/shopping at Aron's records in LA. Man, he was a crazy kind of guy. He had a weird energy.
And yes, he was buying mucho comps and reissues. Lots of psyche rock if I remember correctly.

I dunno...I'mma music fiend....if there is a song and I want it...I don't care how I get it as long as I have it. I don't care if it's a 32 kbps mp3, a comp., and 8 track, whatever.... and it's all I can get....Imma get it.

It's nice to get stuff on vinyl just cause the format allows for so much manipulation tho.

Alot of valid points again.I agree with everyone here.Price,hard to find,"rules" whatever.The main thing is like One said i'm a music fiend.Mp3,c.d.,8 track,internet,whatever.If i cna use it or like it then it's mine.

vinyl is vinyl...period

i personally like used records, cuz i like the scratch and pop and the "dusty" warm sound...thats why i avoid new wax most of the time. but thats just me.

to sample from an mp3 is pure fradulent......cool to listen to...but to use it as a sample in a song is sum toy sh!t......the internet has made it possible for people with very little knowledge of music to get hold of sick breaks without ever getting their fingers dusty....

I'll listen to tunes on any format....but when sampling I stick to vinyl...and generally originals....but like mans are saying...if you can only get it on a re-issue....fug it...

Wow, Ive been there a few times, thats the one on melrose right. Isnt fatbeats up the street?

what i do is, i look for alot of spanish records, ones people usually skip over, usually there a crazy ill sample that comes outta nowhere

I tend to side with this school of thought, because to some extent, I see digging as part of the creative process.

I don't consider myself a hardcore digger, more of a 'diet digger', or 'digger lite', so I'd never call somebody out for not using originals.
Myself, I sample about 95% off of original vinyl, and 5% from other sources.

I guess I just thought the Madlib interview was interesting because he's known for sampling such wacked out rare stuff that I just assumed that he would be more of a purist like some other producers are.
