Syncing to DAT...

I want to record multiple tracks (one at a time) from the MPC2000xl to a DAT multitrack. How do I sync the two so that each seperate track of the sequnce starts at the same point on the tape? In other words, how do I get the sequence to start and the tape to begin recording simultaneously?
Any advice would be extremely helful. Thanks

OK, Dog, I know tha pro-ceedure, but you gotta give me a couple answers first. Do you have SMPTE installed in your MPC? If not, are there midi jacks on the DAT recorder? Get back to me and I'll run it all down for you.

Yes there is an smpte installed on the mpc, no there is not midi jacks on the dat.

...right, there's SMPTE on the MPC2000xl & a nine pin jack on the back of the DAT (DB-9 connection). The ADAT model is Alesis LX20

i have only basic DAT experience but SMPTE is what you'll be using in your case

you will need to "stripe" a track on the DAT, which means sacrificing an audio channel to encode time data which the mpc will read and time off of.

in this way, the "stripe" is an absolute time reference, so make sure you record longer then you will need.

as for the very specifics of how to do this, you will need the appropriate cables of course and your mpc manual nearby to explain SMPTE process. shouldnt lose sleep over it though, but let us know how it goes!
