Hey, it's great a few cats can cut corners and go right to the top because they knew the right people and got endorsements early on...but c'mon now!! For me, it's the struggle of ten+ years work that give me the insight and flexibility to do what I do, not a computer program. That only came into the picture for me fairly recently anyway...and it didn't stop me from making records or creating songs when I didn't use one.
As I always state in these types of debates, THERE WILL BE EXCEPTIONS. Some people are naturally gifted. I would feel different if more cats took on music theory or learned an instrument. But software, hardware (samplers), etc. are NOT a career path. True dues must be paid for opportunities to present themselves most of the time. I feel the same way about Korg Tritons. Great piece of gear capability-wise, but cats put too much on it. Reminds me of the time some clown Triton owner came through saw my MPC2000, said 'wow the MPC that sh** is tight, what sounds does it come with??' I said none you have to put sounds in it. To which this dude said 'aww, that's weak!'. No, I'm afraid relying on premade products, sound libraries, and handouts to give you capability is the official definition of weak. To each their own or whatever, but some of these cats are no more producers than cats that got their whole rapper steez from '8-mile' are real emcees. Final thought: You ain't gonna make great sounding records like they did in the 60's-80's with any stand alone computer program.
The mpc is a computer itself first all (with ram, and operating system, disk drives, etc).
"All that computer sh** is cool.....But how come cats don't want to pay dues?"
Yo man, some of us cats...we are still here, we are still payin dues, we are still buyin records, we are still cuttin for 6 hours straight a day when time permits. dont even trip on that. i still cut daily, check my soundclick page for the rasco remix, those are my cuts. I love to skratch first and foremost, thats my first love.
"For me, it's the struggle of ten+ years work that give me the insight and flexibility to do what I do, not a computer program."
You probably didnt mean it that way but I get a lot of flack from hardware users who assume I take the "easy road out" by using my pc, but when you break it down, I'm still diggin, choppin, triggerin, and sequencing, just like someone on a sp-1200 or an mpc. The computer isnt doing anything more for me then your mpc does for you, thats for sure. So i'm not sure what you meant by that. Maybe you saw some kid randomly clickin his mouse with some weak ass shit, but thats not me.
Lotta times cats are like "yo all u did was download some shit, u never worked for shit like us", but in fact, i paid for my tables, my wax, my laptop, my akai pads, my interface, software, etc etc. **** that, i know about payin dues, i know about eatin ramen and payin off your boy every check you get for a 500 dollar audio interface, mowin lawns in order to get moms to give u a ride to fat beats to cop wax. all that shit., i been there, still there, its just not an mpc. I know how you feel.
At the same time, there are so many cats who dont. I know the ones you speak on. BUT, its always the wack kids on software that get blamed, and the wack ass kids who had mommy buy an mpc 4000 dont seem to get checked. Whether its an mpc 4000, or a kid on a laptop, dues are merely dues. If you're wack, then you're wack.
Sure, lil jimmy may choose to think hes hard cuz he loaded some preset sounds into FL and made a beat in 5 minutes. But that doesnt put us all in his place, like i said before, i cant speak for everyone, BUT I* am still diggin wax, still samplin/choppin (cool edit/soundforge), still triggerin shit with pads and keys (akai pads and 49 key controller), still sequencin' (FL), still boom bap, still hiphop.
I feel you on learning more instruments, thats why I still cut daily, and make tracks with nothin but turntables being used. I even mess around learnin a few chords on my guitar, in addition to learnin some shit on my keyboard. its all about expanding. its funny, cuz whenever hardware cats come at me about usin what I use, i just say "if you're so into 'keepin it real', trash that mpc/sp1200/whatever and go buy a drum set and an upright bass, etc.
