Pc 8 character limit (am i screwed?)

SITUATION:
I resaved mpc 2000 files to zip from my PC. Now the MPC doesnt recognize the SND sample file names and/or drum voice names because the PC only allows 8 character/letters for the file names.

QUESTION:
Is there any fix to this problem? How do I get mpc to recognize the files? (I dont have the complete original names of these files). Thanks in advance for your help.

The mpc only allows 8.3 format, the pc will read it. It changes in the mpc itself.. If u don't have the original names then you might as well figure out the beat all over again of place the sounds manually back onto the pads you think they go to. Other than that your music is lost. The sequencing might still be there saved with ALL but the APS/PGM is going to be messed up if the names aren't correct..

does anyone know if macs do this? can you rename the files and put them back in the mpc?
my mpc wont load some of the files at all, its the first time id seen that message...

Rule #1 of MPC "fight with the ZIP" club. Just kidding..

#1. Always give your sounds short names anyway to avoid confusion.
ie.... 12345678.123 = 8.3 format that MPC loves and will never fail.
ex... baddrumz.snd or funkyhat.wav got it..?

#2. When I used Iomega ZIPs I had problems when trying to format on either machine PC or MPC and reading/saving in either. I would lose partition information and the ZIP was destroyed. I had to reformat the ZIP using Iomega-ware format utility..

#3. When I got sick of Iomega ZIPs I moved to Fuji brand ZIPs and I formatted using XP. I was able to read/save/write to the ZIP disk in MPC2kxl and/or MPC. I had no problems after that EVER..

#4. Pay close attention to #1 and slap yourself if you still mess it up..

Test it out for yourself homey.

Try this:
Take a drum sample or any sample on your PC and give a long azz
name okay.

Then put it on disk and load it into yor MPC. It will load just fine. Now go back and check the name of that file in the TRIM screen or PARAMS or anywhere else.

See what I mean? The MPC will change the name to be 8.3 format..

If that had have been a whole APS and ALL with alot of long name samples in it you would be screwed cause the MPC will not no where to laod all the samples cause the names are jacked up..

yeah , but i thought that the 8.3 limitation was imposed by windows not by the mpc, so how could you give it a name longer than 8 characters. wouldn't windows just make it smaller when you saved it? I will try it today to see what happens, but all of my disk that are formatted on the mpc have names that are longer than 8 characters.

How did you name the files originally, on Windows right? See, Windows is not at fault. Windows is doing what you told it to do. It is the MPC that cuts names down to 8.3 format. Everyone thinks that it's Windows and it is not. It's the MPC that is cutting long filenames.. You might catch h e l l trying to get your songs back in order..

That is load of crack. The MPC allows 16 characters for filenames. It's just that it is in a format that Winblows cannot read the 2nd set of 8 characters.

the files were never touched by pc or windows until it it straight **** the files...they were originally virgin from the mpc.
