If someone wants to work together and write a GUI for it then let me know.

I will try and change the code in the OSX version so that it uses apples internal audio library and then it will be easy to install for mac. When Tiger is released it might also be possible to make it work with the new Dashboard. ..which could be really quick and painless for end users.

I haven't done any updates or work on coding for a while as I just got a triton and been making a lot of music with that and my mpc.

Its easy to make apps for dashboard...if you can make a website then you can do alright making a dashboard app...a little bit of javascript and you can call CLI programs. Dashboard is gonna be really powerful and very useful I think. You could make a little app to time stretch and chop up all your loops and have it sitting on the desktop waiting to be used...at least I hope that is the case.

i knew programming for Dashboard was easy but i didnt realise it was THAT easy.. this is something worth looking into..

Just had to add for all those questioning the motives behind editing or re-writing the os-
People keep saying that the MPC1k was designed to be the first portable MPC, and that you are meant to use it in conjunction with a pc to chop up samples etc.......
well hold the f**k on a minute. How can that make sense?! the first portable mpc.... providing you carry a computer with you so you can timestretch and quickly chop samples.....

-And the copy and paste instead of move option on step edit... thats just plain stupid, its basically a 'buy an mpc2000xl [and a big bag/slave to carry it!]' advertisement everytime you want to be creative.
Nice thinking by AKAI/several users here

It does p**s me off a bit how its well within their power to change these things but they let the people who pay to provide them a living suffer.
Normally companies listen to feedback and try to make their products the best they can, then if they want to have different versions of the products for different ends of the user scale they create an improved version of those products too, not cripple the usability of their latest products;
Especially when it means purposely contradicting the reason the product exists in the first place!! (MPC1000 = designed to be a portable 'music production centre'!.... *small print* that ALSO requires a)100% forward planning - ruining creativity and stopping any 'on-the-spot' sampling and writing /or/ b)ANOTHER piece of equipment (i.e. a laptop/notepad) to transfer/load up/edit/process/save/transfer/load up a sample just to play it backwards or a few notes higher without cut off.

ah well, my 2 cents

honestly it would probably be easier to build your own drum machine from scratch. Give akai some competition then maybe we'll get the features that shouldve been there in the first plce.

"it is illegal to reverse engineer software that has been patened and copywrited"

Not true. We can use the Dcss DVD copy protection scheme as a example. Billion dollar companies and many countries' legal systems have attempted to sue/jail Johansen that reverse engineered it. Turns out that doing this is not illegal. What is illegal is writing software that uses this dcss decryption.

"but whoever takes on the mission to modify the 1000 OS could use the original code as reference only and write an alternate one from scratch. Therefore creating a new OS, not the same as akai. so at that point it is not considered reverse engineering but rather engineering your own software."

Creating a new one using another as a reference is shaky ground at best. Software companies have gotten sued using similar gimmicks. Now that Alesis owns Akai Pro, I would not announce that I was doing anything like this just in case they have a really bored lawyer.

If you didn't reverse engineer anything (or more to the point if you didn't have to) and you just took existing publicly available documentation for all the components concerned and just went ahead and engineered something brand new, I don't think there's anything Akai could do.

It has been done for other hardware. Someone wrote an OS called "Typhoon" for the Yamaha TX16W sampler. There was also an alternative OS for the Cheetah MS6 synth module that fixed many bugs and extended MIDI implimentation. There's a couple of hacks I can think of too. Someone did an OS hack of the Akai S950 OS so it ran on the S900, the so called S900 "V4 OS". Similiarly somebody hacked the "red" Roland SP808ex OS to run on the earlier "black" SP808.

I'm a professional computer programmer and my work has at times included very low level code; assembler on embedded systems stuff like that. Would I write a brand new OS for the MPC1000? Not in a million years. What a waste of time. Who am I to assume I could do a better job than the Akai programmers. For every bug of their's I might resolve I'd probably introduce two of my own. Would I have a fiddle with the existing code if provided with full-documentation of all existing code and hardware and a complete SDK for all the hardware and the programmers at the end of the phone line? Yes, that'd be fun.

uCLinux is a light-weight realtime OS that has access to many services like Audio & MIDI I/O (ALSA), graphics (take your pic), USB, as well as the possibility of using most POSIX type programs with little or no modification.

It's well supported by gcc tools, and has been ported to the SH series of processers.

Yeah that's interesting. If there's no proprietary Akai chips in the 1k that could be a way to go.

But hell where! Let's do Tetris, Asteroids, Breakout lol!
