yep that sound like a good way of doing it. i've just been using the left subgroub out on my mixer in to the sampler.
your correct about a midi cable - midi out on mpc to midi in on sampler.
to the best of my knowledge there are no OS upgrades avaliable for the s950.
memory can be upgraded to 2.25mb via two 750kb cards. you can also add a scsi interface but they are hard to find. best bet would be to get one in and s950 and sell your current one or swap the card over as i have never seen them for sale seperately.

yea, highest OS i know of for the s950 is 1.2, you shouldnt worry about that though, it seems the same as 1.0...
one midi cable is all you should need, from the MPC OUT to the S950 IN, i dont see any purpose to use the S950 MIDI OUT, just the AUDIO OUTS...
the best way to sample with the s950 is to route the sample source stereo signal into a mixer with SUBGROUPS/BUSSES and route the stereo signal into A BUS CHANNEL, with a cable routed from that particular BUS to the S950 RECORD INPUT on the front of the machine... it sounds much better this way instead of just going straight from a dj mixer, you can use the GAIN and EQs on your mixer for more control over the sound before sampling...

yea elm,
i used to run my samples straight from my vestax dj mixer into the mpc/950... as soon as i got a 16 channel mixer with 4 busses i hooked it up this way and it sounds 100% better to me... you get both the right and left stereo signal into two seperate channel strips, then route both of those to the same subgroup/bus that will go from the mixer into the REC INPUT on the MPC/950... it is recording(sampling) in mono of course, but it seems to me that by routing both sides of the stereo signal and mixing them into one channel you get far more definition of the sound in your samples...
try it out and let me know what you think... id like to know if you notice the same type of improvement...

wouldnt that be approximately the same as getting a stereo-to-mono y-cable and using that as your input into the 950?

plus it gives you more flexibility as you can route your cd player, minidisc player, computer or whatever is patched into you mixer to the subgroup and then to the sampler so it saves you repatching things.
