on my ASR you can take one sample, assign it to many keys, then adjust the start point and end points of the sample (parameters) so each key plays a different region of the same sample (as well as being able to change the envelopes, filters, ect per pad). saves alot of memory space.

on the MPC 60 i can't find a way to do this... it seems like you have to copy an entire sound (vs. just the parameters) in order to edit it's start and end points per pad. is this correct?

like if i have a drum loop and i want to split it into kick, hat, snare i have to copy the entire loop three times and then adjust soft start and end and then trim it?

thanks in advance, lots more beginner questions to come

forgot to say, i'm running OS 3.1

thanks

This is unique to the ASR, the 60 can't assign different start and end points to the same sample on different pads. You need to edit each sound into the sections you want. you could have multiple copies of the sample and do it, but it would waste memory. Just sequence your ASR with the 60, and you'll be in heaven.

what i usually do is just sample A kick, A snare, A hi-hat from the break/drum loop.

seems easy enough to me. maybe it takes more time than what you're used to with the ASR, though.

yeah, drum loop was kind of a bad example... more like when i sample a long loop and want to chop it into 1/4 segments... not enough memory to copy it 4 times and then truncate each one...

another question - when you copy a zone to the temp memory, where does it go? how do you paste it somewhere else? or what do you to with it? can it only be inserted back into the original sample that you are editing?

thanks

I broke that down in another thread, do a search or if someone remembers where it is, post a link please. We just talked about it last week.

If you read the back pages of this 60 forum you'll get two manuals worth of useful information.

ok - sorry another nubie question... (i tried to search for the answer with no avail) - is there a setting for the samples so that they only trigger for as long as you hold the pad down? (vs. playing the entire length of the sample when you tap the pad)...

i know you can set the samples from poly to mono so they cut eachother off (and up to two more pads can cut it off as well) but i can't seem to figure out how to set it up so the note just plays for as long as you have the pad pressed...

thanks

ps el, i read your thread about copying zones into .1 sec samples. good shit. gonna try that this weekend. thanks.

do you remember the thread title? or what did you search for?

i searched for "zones" i believe... basically what he said is record several .1 sec samples.. then take your long sample, set up your zone that you want to chop out, copy it (using <do>)

then you select your .1 sample, and paste the zone into it (also using <d0>) then you trim the .1 out of the beginning or end depending on where you inserted the zone.

viola! i'm sure el put it better than i did though.

i think that's what i need. i was working on a beat last night (i'm a newb myself) and i wanted to chop it up and assign it to different pads. i'm wondering if it's possible to save this whole chop somehow? you know, like say you have the whole OG sample. i ONLY NEED about 5 parts of it and i don't think i'm going to use it on another beat so basically i guess i want to truncate (delete) the parts of the sample that are NOT NEEDED for this beat.

how can i (we) do this? with el's suggestion?

but i want to be able to the override the OG sample and save it with the truncations and chops (w/ proper start/end points once i've got all the zones correct). AND i want to also save a clean version of the longer, 4 bar melody (minus the parts i don't need). i'm not sure how to go about doing this.

side question: i can't figure out how to set up a SONG with TWO simultaneous sequences. i know how to use the second sequence function while you're in the MAIN SCREEN, but how would you program that to play in SONG MODE? cuz i have a 4 bar sample/melody sequence that i want to play with a 2 bar drum beat sequence. but i can't figure out how to do this in SONG MODE. i can only enter one sequence to play on each step whereas i'm trying to find out how to get two sequences to play on each step.

my plan for this beat is to intro it with the chorus line which is the full 4 bar melody + drum loop for a couple of times then the verse will be the chopped chorus. don't have a bridge yet, but i have i deas on different variations of the chopped verse to switch it up a bit. i'm trying to figure out how i can have one sample stored of the complete 4 bar melody AND stored zones of the chopped 4 bar melody at the same time so that i can switch off between seq.1 and seq.2, 3, 4 etc. and have seq. 1 be the long version and the other sequences be different variations of 2 bar chopped zones from the main 4 bar melody. then i can program these sequences in SONG MODE. but the whole time i only want a 2 bar drum pattern to play over these variations/sequences which would have to be a completely different sequence (ie., seq. 5). you know what i mean?

i have the sample set to 'note off' to get that chopped feel while i make 2 bar variations.

hmmm... well i hesitate to give you any advice since i don't really know what the **** i'm talking about.

but to kill the parts of the sample you don't want, set the soft start and end, and then using the DO menu select "delete before soft start" and "delete after soft end". since you can't set different start and end points on one sample i would try this: say you have a 4 bar loop and you wanna chop that into 4 1 bar snips. set your zone for the first bar, copy that and paste into one of your .1 sec samples. repeat for the next three bars. (remember to delete the .1 sec snips) once you have finished that, delete the original 4 bar loop to save memory space.

now you can play your chops in any order you want, or if you want to retain the 4 bar loop just play the 4 pads in succession.

i'm still trying to figure out the sampling functions before i get into the heavy sequencing aspects, but it seems like you shouldn't be trying to play two sequences at once, but rather multiple tracks... which would play together independent of their loop length (like a tracker) right?

anyway, hopefully that was helpful. i will probably get bashed for spreading disinformation, but just trying to use my limited knowledge to help a fellow noob.

post some beats when you figure it out :D

Just copy the tracks from the second sequence into the main sequence, then mute to taste in song mode.

yall really need to study that manual, it's got the goods, and the more you use the MP, the more you get out of the manual.

I still read it every once in a while.
