On the RECORD page, there is an option you can mess around with called THRESHOLD. What is this for?

threshold determines when your mpc1000 starts picking up the sound,
i.e. if you set it -12, the sound will be recorded only when it reaches that db.
this is useful when you have hiss or vinyl sound on the sound you wanna
record, and dont want it to start until the real sound comes in.

A problem i noticed with sampling vinyl is the hiss and pop of the record throws the record monitor level about 3/4 of the way to the end, so how do i get threshold to work in this case?

don't use the threshold, do it by ear. Set the threshold to 0, then hit record(F6), then hit start(F6 again) when you want to start sampling.
