Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

Yo I wrote this is a different topic but would like to hear other peoples idea and hopefully help the haters see things in a parellel and relative view:

'The fact is, there are only some many combination of notes. (especially with minor and major scales etc and shit like that) so no melody or bassline, or part of a song will be original. What makes it original is the combination of the parts used.

For me any kind of art is about expression (visual, musical, performance, etc), so you've got to be able to get good enough to express yourselves. Completely.

If you want to compare visual art to music, (there are a lot of similarities, believe) then you could imagine colours as instruments.
So red is a piano, pretty much all reds are the same, but you can get different shades (ie. grand piano, bright piano, etc), yellow is a guitar (you could include other 'stringed' instruments, banjo, strings, violin, etc), again there are different shades, blue=blown instruments, black and white are the drums/rhythm (they pull everything together and are able to alter the feeling of other parts). The other colours are combinations of these elements.
The point is that an artist turns these basic elements into something entirely different, by the way they layer and compose the elements.

In a way, sampling is beautiful art because it enables people to take carefully selected premixed colours and place them together to create something that would be very time consuming and possibly expensive (the right equipment would be needed), to recreate themselves. Do you hear people slate the great masters because when they used purple they didnt mix it from the red and blue themselves? do you ****. ' (However, they do add more colours when needed, just as you should with effects and filters)

It's an art depending on the way they are arranged or used. Just an ideal of putting together samples from other songs is an art in it self.

yeah but u need substance too.. hence the expression part,
when people have got an actual statement to say (or express) rather than just talking then it makes that art so much better. And I guess good art (music or wateva) is something that manages to convey that in a stylistic way.

Also think outside the box on this one, i dont just mean a rapper talking about gun and drugs and how shit it was in the hood, i mean like the producer expressing emotions through his music, coz in my opinion thats always gonna b a million times better than just some meaningless pop chart crap

(most of the time when people produce they do it without ever consciously thinking they are gonna try and make it sad or whateva, but usually, the better the producer, the more honest/clear the expression and the more detail the music)
