Hello , the video classic did for those who are stuck with how to sync up cubase to the mpc is great.
I have a step by step but with a different way to sync up nuendo 3 or cubase with the mpc without the need for the 2 dummy bars. This is just for the sake of recording into cubase at 4 or 8 bars because he is right in the video, you don’t really need to sit there for the whole track to finish.
I will skip the audio connection part because I assume you know how to make the connections.
I im going to explain how I do it with nuendo 3 because its what I have and since cubase 3 is similar in GUI things should look pretty much the same.
First for arguments sake I use the RME hammerfall dsp and this is how I have my midi set up.
I will only give(for simplistic reasons) information on how my midi is set up just with the mpc in the midi chain between my computer (mac) and my mpc.
THE MPC IS A SLAVE
MIDI OUT from my RME, TO MIDI IN 2 on my MPC. This is all I need to sync my mpc to nuendo. Because I only work in MIDI clock mode. All I am doing is recording a 4 or 8 bar loop into nuendo 3.
Now, on the mpc (shift 9) screen top left hand side it says sync in
move the cursor over to the right and highlight (in:) set this to 2 .
Below it says mode: set this to clock
everything below leave it as is and in the window to the right you leave alone as well.
Now in nuendo3 /cubase go to the tab “TRANSPORT” scroll down to “SYNC SETUP”
you will see a synchronization set up window.
On the left hand side look for “TIME CODE” and make sure its set to none. Below that it should say “MACHINE CONTROL”,set that to none as well. Where it says “SEND MIDI CLOCK” (choose you sound cards midi port). On the MAC it will only display your sound card midi as port 1
Now, in nuendo/cubase go to the “PROJECT”tab.
Scroll down to where it says “PROJECT SET UP”
you will see a project set up window.
You will see this below
START Set this to 0:00:00:00
LENGTH This I have set to 0:20:00:00 it not relevant to me but this is how its set
FRAME RATE This at 30 but I don’t use MMC
DISPLAY FORMAT this is set to bars and beats
DISPLAY OFFSET Set this to 0:00:00:00
BAR OFFSET Set this (important) to 0
SAMPLE RATE I chose 44.1
RECORD FORMAT 24bit
RECORD FILE TYPE Aiff (mac)
STEREO PAN LAW -3db
Now on the “TRANSPORT BAR” (this is where you pres play record etc.) look for the word “SYNC” it should be to the right of the record button. Make sure it says SYNC INT. If it does not it will be the color orange, to change it to SYNC INT just click it with the mouse and it should activate.
Also keep tempos simple like MPC is set to 90 CUBASE set to 90.
I don’t do things like set the mpc to 90.5 and set cubase to 90.500, things may get complicated (even though they shouldn’t but simplicity is key.)
I hope this was not to long and I hope I didn’t make a mistake but this is how I have my mpc synced up with nuendo 3 and this way I don’t have to worry about the 2 bar dummy thing because once my tracks are in the computer I sequence and arrange from their.
