you can recognize it a mile off - the high end, sweet and sexy little distortion on basses, mids, drums - everything. the "SP sparkle" is one of the greatest sounding elements in the sampler world - which is funny, because it's actually a lower quality, bastardized version of the pure sound wave...but it's so SWEET.

for years i didn't know where it came from. i studied all the greats, listened to the sparkle and heard it again and again, from a variety of places. i used to be a computer producer (acid pro, then reason) and i went through several hundred DX plugin chains to try and find it.

then i bought my mpc1k, hoping that maybe there was a filter or something. no luck, but no problem anyway- i just constructed my shit around it.

then one fine afternoon it hit me. i accidently clicked the wrong dx plugin in acid while freaking a sample for my mpc by mistake and all the sudden the SP1200 sound was there.

this plugin is called the Hyperprism Sonic Decimator. you can control how sparkly you want it - from the point where the distortion overcomes the sound or to the other extreme, where it's just icing on a beat cake. i downloaded this program as an H20 try before you buy bootleg, and i plan to buy the next update.

for all of you who like the sound and taste of the sp1200 but want a bigger sample time, this is for you. you have 2 options - you can apply it to your samples in acid or cubase before you export them to your mpc, or you can put the effect on when you track out to mix in cubase/acid/whatever.

it makes basslines ring so nice!!! and the drums...oh the drums...

i'll put a screenshot of the sonic decimator up later. meanwhile, anyone got any questions or comments?

this isn't tracked out yet, but i applied Sonic Decimator to some of the samples, you'll probably be able to tell which. a couple are reaaaally obvious.

pardon the lack of mastering, it's just a straight record from the spdif. the cables are working out very well, by the way. thank you

i don't know, i don't listen to popular music.

check out anything by Jel, some by Odd Nosdam, i think Latyrix uses an sp as well.

Buck65, too.

yeah anticon (particularly Jel with all his work) seems to be the first to use the sound as an effect, lovingly. otherwise, some sp users eq it out in tracking just to maintain a more "clean" feel.

it's been described as the most beautiful grit and dirt you can ever grime on a record. this way, however, your needle won't get ripped up by all the bloody rust you have to spin through.

who else uses an sp?

no hostility, sorry if it sounded like that. text is damn near impossible to convey simplicity without sounding like a dick.

does anyone else know who uses/used an sp who could be an example for lordtalib?

ps, MPC -Tutor has something against a guy named richard. every time i put the word for phallus that starts with a d and ends with ick, the word Richard pops up instead.

I'm loving that beat. "this is a song for the genius child" was a nice touch. It has a calming intensity and every progression seems to fit( I'm sick of static beats)

I'm definitely gonna download that plug in. Jel's one of favorite producers too. I had "The Toss and Turn" stuck in my head this morning. Everything with him is so sparse but perfect. No wasted sounds. I guess that comes with only 10 seconds sample time.

thanks man, i appreciate the comments. toss n turn has been stuck in my head since i first heard it. there are few beats that top that one in terms of artistry and catchiness, in my opinion.

the genius child sample is from a langston hughes poem, i have 73 of them on cd

damn guys thanks for the positive comments.

sorry to have posted my ish on the 1k board but hopefully you can all tell at what point it gets converted to 12 bit with the sparkle - i put a light touch on part 1 minute and 42 seconds into it, and then a heavier dose which can be heard from 2:24 on. the instrument with the heaviest dose starts soloing at 2:30.

i truly love this effect. and using multiple accoustic drum pgms in one song, and switching up the beat without much repetition.

haha god i love making beats....again thanks for your comments. for those of you who have pmed me regarding this subject, check yoru mail/pms.
