sampling from turntables

i have a technics 1200 hooked up to a stanton sk2f mixer running into 1/4 inch jacks on my mpc 2000.

when i sample, i have to turn all the levels all the way up on my mixer plus turn the orange rec knob on my mpc all the way up... and i feel like at this point i should be blasting my ears out. but it's at a level that seems too quiet. the drums i have loaded onto the pads from a disk sound a lot louder.

is this normal? is something wrong w/ my connections? or mixer? or what?

I think you need to have a real Phono Pre-amp I guess

jAVASCRIPT IS CORRECT, YOUR PROBLEM IS THAT A NON PRE AMPED SIGNAL FROM ANY TURNTABLE WILL ALWAYS PRODUCE FAINT RESULTS. lOOK AT IT LIKE THIS, IF YOU'VE EVER RECORDED ANY VOCALS YOU KNOW THAT A MIC PRE AMP IS NEEDED TO BOOST THE SIGNAL ENABLING A STRONG REPRODUCTION OF THE SOUND/VOCALS CAPTURED. THAT NEEDLE ON YOUR TURNTABLE IN REALITY IS NOTHING BUT A MINATURE MICROPHONE HENCE WHERE YOU GET THAT FEEDBACK POPPING WHEN YOU FIRST DROP THE NEEDLE. AIGHT!!!

I also sample from a Technics Sl 1200 but I use a vestax pmc pro 06 mixer

I have played on stanton mixer when i played in a club and
the output volume on the stanton mixers are low.

Ive also have a friend that is a owner of a sk2f mixer and he thinks the volume are way too quiet too

just turn the volume way up and it should be fine !

if it ends up wery low in the end when you compose beats there is an setting in the mixer section, just turn the decibel level up so youre beats wont be montain hi and valley low aight

do you actually need a separate phono pre amp? i always thought that the mixer is acting as the preamp.

i think maybe it is like oraziodelcore said, that this particular stanton mixer just doesn't have a strong output. i have all the levels all the way up so for now, this seems like the highest level i can get.

does anyone have any other opinions on good mixers for sampling?

NAME BRAND ISN'T THE ISSUE POWER IS. I USE AN MTX SOUNDCRAFTSMEN DJ MIXER MY & MIXER IS LIKE 6 PLUS YEARS. IF YOU SHOULD CHOOSE TO THERES ALWAYS THE PO MAN'S WAY.
THOSE HOME STEREO RECIEVERS YOU NEVER LISTEN TO ANYMORE GUESS WHAT THEY HAVE PRE AMPS. SOMETIMES YOU JUST GOTTA GET CREATIVE!

try connecting to your amp that your mixer is connected to

i actually don't have an amp connected to my mixer. do you need one? as i was saying before, i thought the mixer acted as a preamp so another amp wasn't necessary...?

I used to sample straight from my technics and never had a problem with sound. Plugging the rca's to the line in, and even using the mpc to ground my turntables. The only thing was that I couldn't adjust the bass and treble. Is this strange?

To adjust the bass and treble, you should hook the turntable(s) up to a mixer, with adjustable bass and treble, then hook up the mixer to the MPC.

When dealing with turntables, you need a mixer to adjust the bass and treble.

Hiya, I may be a newbie as of today, but I know my mixers, as I've used most.

The top two, without doubt, are Vestax and the technics world champ one.

btw, the technics one is real loud, as a huge pre-amp built in, so you'll actually have to turn your sh*t down!

I found that when sampling from vinyl, the bass disappears, even if you monitor from the mpc. What I mean is, I use the mpc to monitor the incoming sound to eq on the mixer, but once I've sampled it, the playback of the sample is quite low in bass. It sounds different, no idea why. Anyone?

Don't leave the RANE TT series mixers out, I like mine just as much as the Vestax.

i too, am using Technics and a Vestax.

I have my mixer decibals turned way up, and my mixer and REC. Gain all the way up.

i have RCA's in the line out of the mixer, and 1/4 jacks in the REC. INS of the mpc.

I also monitor from my earphones.

but i STILL get very quiet samples!
is there something wrong with the connections?
i thought you could sample perfectly fine with just a turntable and a mixer.
