Early Drum Swing Question

I dont know if you guys know who oddisee is from halftooth records but his drums have hella swing, and his snare hit really early. it fits his style and i am wonderin if you guys could help me trying to mime that style.

I dont know who he is but I do know what you are talking about.
when you record your midi on individual tracks into the mpc you can set the swing value to each midi track. best thing to do is experiment to see what i mean.

the default is 50% on every track. Try setting the kick track to say 53% and set the snar track to 60% and maybe even see what the hi hat track will sound like at 59% you will hear the difference vey quickly.

I like Oddisee,but i'm not too sure about his swing.I'm not even sre what gear he uses.Just experiment and i'm sure you'll find something to fit your style.


I'm not sure if he produces Words' tracks but Words' is nice.

he uses a akai mpc 2000xl

it's similar to the drums on a lot of dilla beats - the best way to do this is turn quantise off, play the drums as best you can, then move them if needed in step editor to get them sounding perfect.. using the swing function won't sound right because the drums actually need to be slightly off-beat

he uses an asr-x pro (the red joint...i've never seen someone freak an asr-x like that in my life).

you can create that swing easily with the MPC2KXL.. Something like:

- Snare (Early, 54%, amount 3)
- Hihat (Later, 56%, amount 5)

what up a minor! all you had to do was ask!(LOL) first off...i dont use an mpc but i own a 2000xl. i use an asr-x its the box version of the asr-10 keyboard. but to answer your question, all i do is not quantize my drums. except for the snare. and i only quantize the snare that hits on the 2 and the 4. i quantize that on 1/8. and the rest is just tapping it in on the pads with multiple fingers as if the drums where keys on a piano. as for the drum patterns...i get them from the traditional music of my home land, Sudan. if you hear there music you'll see that there percussions are played a bit off beat always. i hope that helps, get at me, peace.

Nottz uses it too, the keyboard one AND the black one; I don't know why, maybe to get more sampling time? Do you know why Oddisee?


Something obvious caught my attention, in Nottz and Oddisee's beats: the hihats swizzle, the snares got this particular sound. I guess this is the sound of the Ensoniq ASR's converters, fat converters, just like the MPC 3000's, MPC 60's and the SP 1200's.

IDEA: steal on of these machines and exchanges their converters with your MPC 2000xl's; but I guess it won't match; although, the MPC 3000 got the biggest converter ever built on an AKAI sampler...
