MPC 1000 and Riffs...

I am thinking of buying an MPC 1000. Could anyone tell me if it possible to compose riffs/melody lines with this machine as I know it is almost mostly used for creating beats? Sorry if this sounds daft but I am pretty much new to sampling/digital technology, etc.

Yes. You can build instrument programs, not just drum programs. For example (the following is just a shorthand)

TR808.pgm
PAD A1:Kick.wav
PAD A2:Snare.wav
PAD A3:Cowbell.wav
PAD A4:Tom.wav
etc

PIANO.pgm
PAD A1: PianoC1.wav
PAD A2: PianoC#1.wav
PAD A3: PianoD1.wav
PAD A4: PianoD#1.wav
etc

Although samplers designed solely for this purpose allow more sophisticated options you can cover most things with the MPC1000.

You can then play the "piano sounds" with the pads or with an external MIDI keyboard plugged in.

There's also a '16 levels' function, where it will spread a sample over the 16 pads, with the root note selected by you. This is a quick and easy way to knock out melodies with just one sample.

You can also set the Q-link slider to control the tuning of a sample and change it's pitch with that, and even record the results - good for random jams!
