If I get an MPC what else will I need to make sick beats?

I can definitely do alot with just an MPC.
I've made many complete songs with just an MPC.

IMO, MPC is limited yes but the limits directly
reflect your imagination/creativity.

This is all good advice so thanx one and all but could anyone tell me a bit more abot the mp7. ie who makes it and a rough price. I'm also none the wiser as to what an or the eq is

It's an equalizer, it helps to clear up the sounds of what ever you listen to. On your car radio the bass and treble knobs are eq's but that's a very simple form. I found an old 70's eq for next to nothing off of ebay, look at this link and it'll show you how some of them look and if you see onbe cheap enough cop it or checkout your local pawn shops. You might not need one from this site but at least you'll get the idea of what you're looking for.....The more band the better but you could get away with a 5-band eq just starting off.

Yeah, u can make entire songs with the MPC, i've done it time and time again. My point was that it is just a sequencer/sampler. It's got limited memory, don't have a sound bank, and u can't eq. These are very critical limitations. As mentioned earlier, eqing can make a world of difference to drums, a sample, etc. I can't think of any successful producer that uses just an MPC. Dont get it twisted; u can make excellent trax with the MP, but the ability to eq or accentuate a sample with notes from a keyboard or add scratches separates the men from the boys.

You can do everything just with an MPC!
The only real question being witch kind of music/sound you wanna get.
Personally, I'm into rap beats and I do everything just with my MPC and a simple synthetizer.

I wouldn't advice you to get soundbanks. Diggin' is the only way to get real original samples and sounds.

well sirpriz, you cant use just an mpc...you gotta have at least one sound source.

u could have a disk full of pre-made sounds as your sound source and use just an MPC.

anyways, of course you need a source for sampling, a turntable mixer, records...etc. but you said "you cant do much with an MPC"....you can do a lot with an MPC, and now you said top producers need more than an MPC, i know top underground west coast producers who use NOTHING more than an MPC and a turntable, monitor on broke ass Aiwa home stereos, and do their mixes from the MPC straight to mini disc and let it fly at a studio when the mc is ready, and the shit sounds DOPE.

The MPC only gives as much as what you put into it. Theres so many techniques and little things here and there possible on it, its a deep machine and can be a whole studio if you put some work in.

dang yo, I read this and there are a lot of peeps saying use something with the MPC. dog lotsa guys just use an mpc to make a slamming track. Nearly EVERY underground hip-hop record is largely an MPC and little else. DJ shadow does his stuff on MPC only I think, as does pete rock.

Just saying this to point out that its NOT the gear, its the person. If you have a song you wanna get down you will find a way to make the mpc do it.
I think people that say the MPC alone isnt enough just havent expolored sampling as deeply as they should or could. I mean if shadow can do what he does only sampling on the MPC, WOW.

The key (in my not so humble opinion :-O) is the trition and the like are great for people who dont want to dig. the mpc is for those who want to dig.
If you are willing to spend most of a day listenning to a pile of records to yank 5-6 samples to chop and flip into a beat, thats fine more power to you! but most of us dont have the patience. I often find myself looking for a sample, or a break that I have in my head but get tired of digging and just use a keyboard to construct a patch to make that sound. I will say this, when I go the "dig and find the sample" route, it always slams better then one I programmed myself. matter of fact. whenever I try to make a track with "no sampling" something is just missing from it. Its not that it dont bump ok, it does, its just that Im an old skool head who dj's so I am used to the whole "pull em off vinyl and flip em" and I dont feel "right" doing it any other way.

but I will say this and agree with the heads on here, the best thing to do is to get a piece of gear as your FIRST piece, that will be the centerpiece or close to it in a studio that grows larger IE, the MPC, it will always have a central role in any studio you make and thus is a good choice to start off with, kinda like the triton studio, it would always be at the center if I went that route.
