MPC4000 tempo on fly

Hi,

I was trying to adjust the tempo of a sequence on the fly on my mpc4000.
Was dissapointed to see it cant be done unless Im a bit stupid.
I was hitting play record and then moving the sequence tempo value.
I expected to see all the new values recorded into the tempo window but to my dismay no they werent. This is a standard function that has existed on all my sequencers to date.

Can anyone shed any light on this????

Please explain in greater detail what you are trying to do, I dont get what you are saying.

Are you sure your sequence parameter is set to SEQ and not MAS?

OK,

I am trying to increase and decrease the tempo on the fly and have those increments recorded while I am doing it. Yeah the setting is on seq - actually tried both and no joy.

To explain more - on my Yamaha QY700 - I had a jog wheel that I could assign to anything - the tempo track was one of those things. So I would hit play and record on the QY and while my song was playing I could speed up and slow down with the jog wheel in real time aqnd all this speed change would have been written into the sequence once I stopped recording. This is an invaluable tool.

For example ramping down the speed at the end of song could be done really smoothly on the QY and within seconds. If I cant use a similar method on the MPC then that means manually inputting about 50 values which is a mamoth task and the result wont be as fluid.

I got what you are saying now.....cant say I have ever even thought about doing this. I guess you are more of a techno/progressive producer. There isnt much in terms of temp changes in a hip-hop song.

One way to do it would be to make a bunch of small sequences at different bpms then put them together in song mode.

I'm more of a rock musician that likes to use technology to build soundscapes.

basicaly doing the tempo like that allows you to eas things up and down with subtlety the way a live band does and to me that is invaluable - but if the machine cant do it it cant do it.

i never tried it - but did ya mess in the tempo change window? ... it opens if ya hit window whilst your cursor is on the seq tempo field (in main mode). i think things can be done (but i dont think as on your yamaha). dunno if it helps ... try it out ... and whilst your at it (... and since we r all lazy) ... let us know if it helped ...

Well I tried alredy,

couldnt seem to do anything othher than manually input 1 bpm change at a time at 1 time code.

Shame - this would be a nice feature and I am surprised that it isnt. really, the yamaha kicks the MPC's ass for sequencing it really does. But then the MPC is a nice sampler so thats where it wins.

Anyone else got any ideas other than exporting to a pc and doing in in cubase or whatever?

As far as I know it is not possible to record tempochanges on the fly. This falls in the same category as not being able to move / edit notes while the sequenbce is playing. Something that in my opinion belongs in a modern (hardware) sequencer like the MPC.

Wonder if Akai will even move on?
Possibly not as they went bankrupt a while back didnt they?

You can change tempo in the 4k, just not real time - it must be programmed using the tempo change feature. Insert your tempo change before the measure you want it to actually happen. The tempo will change incrementally over the number of beats or bars you specify. You can create very realistic tempo changes after you muck with it a bit. I'm not in front of the MPC at this moment but can give more detailed instructions later.
