I'm trying to do some Glitch hop tracks any tips on how to approach it

never heard of it

loads of processing and experimentation

make some copies of some sounds and play around with using very short loop points. stuff like that, play around.

have any examples of what you're looking to do?

Get some distortion effects ..... guitar stomp boxes are great on MPC outs. Play "regular" sounds through those, record & resample them.

Sample the hiss & crackle of the spaces between tracks on old records.

Make a long sample of the radio being tuned all the way across the dial. You should get hundreds of sounds out of that.

cats like prefuse 73 and some others that aint coming to mind right now do this. It has alot to do with real minuscule chops and effects to give it a glitchy stuttery sound.

Mess around with loop end points. And read Lanks post.

i've been trying that out for a while. a big catch is the sample time, you can't chop it up too small or it won't load.

I've had good luck with running 8 measures of a beat as 1 wave file. I process that wave file in Sound Forge and chop it up as much as I want and save the new file to then use as a loop and cut up into bigger pieces.

This works good if you're wanting to phase a snare every 1/5 a second etc. to get some wild stuttery effects kind of like Forss or Pre-Fuse. Loop programs just won't process in such small increments.

for outboard, track down an Alesis Bitrman. It's a $40 stereo multi-fx unit that has a bit-depth converter in addition to phase and distortion. A great way to glitch up a beat IMO.

yeah, there's a ton of options. bit reduction is very hip. if you have any outboard effects you can run a simple drum loop through a very short delay with a ton of feedback (1-30ms) and some other effects, record this, then chop up the loop into snippets or single hits. if you use loops, try starting them at odd points instead of on the 1st beat. sample hits from crusty old vinyl with alot of noise. experiment.

Well you could add silence to the end of those really short samples, to give it enough length to load.
Listen to some IDM type $h!t, on iTunes radio they have a station called "Cliqhop".
It's under the Electronica umbrella, check it out.

check out www.kvraudio.com they have lots of goodies there for this type of stuff and the forums are helpful from what i hear.

some tracks by Autechre (not generally thought of as glitch-hop, but have always used nice breaks) that come to mind are:

'pen expers' (sounds like 'Sucker MCs' on LSD) from their album Confield

'6IE. CR' and 'V-PROC' from their album DRAFT 7.30

definitely worth checking out if you're interested in this stuff. shouldn't be hard to find.

EDIT: just checked out some Prefuse 73. their stuff seems alot more 'normal' sounding than the tracks i mentioned above. not sure what sound you're looking for. definitely look for the Autechre tracks though, might give you some ideas...

for quality glitch hop check out edIT on www.bleep.com he is off of mu records. it is soulful and deep but with uber quality glitches, if you listen closely no two glitches are the same on the whole cd.
