Share your knowledge on these two classic MPCs

And Skalawa rocks an XL!! Compared to the 60, all other MPC's are less ergonomic as far as accessing the different pages and menus. You can zip anywhere very quickly, it only slows down in some hard processing, doesn't bug me but it might bug some, I found the 4000 slower in many cases because of the size of the files.

I don't think Roger Linn would get royalties from that, he was a contractor, got paid to design the units, got his ideas licenced, I am not sure if he got a percentage of sales, quite possibly. But you see after the 60MK II he worked for roland for a while, on popular machines, so Akai then called him back for the 3k, my guess is aftermarket sales have nothing to do with him, until you buy the OS and SCSI upgrades. WHich by the way, he said he doesn't make money on, Holding on to the stock for years having to shell out cash to have the chips and boards made, it's hardly lucrative, but he show's us love, he loves to hear of pro's still using the 60, 9000, linn drums, etc. The 60 would not be as viable today as it is without the 3.10 OS, without the OS, I'd be forced to use a 3k, which I don't want to do, so I am really grateful for Roger's great idea.

Unfourtantly, Roger got split from the Akai capitral account long ago.

Regardless, he apitimizes the word integritty. He belives 100% in his products, which is why he supports them (even the oldest of the bunch) to this day. I can almost say knowingly though I don't know him, that, he jumped in the equipment game all those years ago for the passion of it, love if you will, and not the duckets. I'm almost certain.

Linn is making some doe though. His Adrenalinn boxes are propular among Techno/Jungle heads and Guitarist alike. Plus i'm sure he has his hands in more projects then he'll admit too! Cat kinda reminds me of Bob Moog in a way, in terms of his passion for this shit.

I wanted to follow up on the 60 vs. 2000/XL functionaility debate.

Please tell me how an XL is faster to get to a function then a 60, when a 60 only requires 1 button press to do a function that may require you to hold shift + key, hit ok, enter new window, scroll, hit ok, open window, execute?

I'm not saying every function the XL does require that much work, but many do. The 60 on the other hand, has no more then 1 screen at any time. Period.

I'm not even trying to say the XL is worst, or better for that matter ether, it's apples and oranges. But I sure like oranges a lot more then I like apples..

I love integrity too I and I just he wish that he got something more from it too especially since his invention is soooooooooooooooooooooooo popular and successfullllllllllllllll. Without him I and you and the others wouldn`t be talking on this mpc board cuz it wouldn`t exist . But I`m glad he got his own business sense and operations running that way he can live how he wants and left an legacy for his kids. I hate to read about geniuses be it in music, technology, art, or whatever field of endeavors dying poor, broke, and lonely but some other living nice off their work. Too much of that happened before in the past. Maybe he could be like Forat and do MPC modifications of some sort. :D

Nah man, Roger Does not support his old Products, he Sold / gave stuff to Forat to do that, check this interview quote:

Interviewer :: I noticed from your website that you still support the old
products from the '80's?

RLinn: 'Oh, no we don't.'

Interviewer:: But there's updates, right?

RLinn:
'Oh, that's true that's for the AKAI machines. For supporting our own products, we basically..there's a couple of brothers that used to work for me, When the company folded in '86, Linn electronics, they started a small business for repair of instruments specializing in repair of..and actually they bought a bunch of our LINN electronic instruments. LM/1, LINNdrum and LINN 9000. And they also bought a bunch of the old spare parts of the auction of the company's asset's and I helped them with the software, I gave them the rights to the software and help them out as much as I could. So they could support the old customers. But I'd just send people over to them. But for the…one minor product I sell at my company now, which is really just a service for a lot of the old users of the AKAI MPC 60 In 1986 I made an agreement with the Japanese AKAI company to make a series of products. There was the MPC-60, the MPC-60 model II and the MPC 3000.where the major products from that association and the MPC series continues to this day to be the international standard for rythmic based music. But what I sell on my website now is something I have for a few years it's not really profitable but it's a software update and the main reason is AKAI, when they switched from their MPC 60's series to their MPC 3000 series, we brought all this new software and I said 'can we import this software to the MPC 60' as much of it as it can be imported just for the old customers and they weren't to interested in that, so…I asked them if I could just do it directly myself and they said yes. But I'm not really making money on it.'

::Very cool that people are still using the MPC after all these years. Just spoke to Marcus Miller and he is still using it, too..

'Yes, it's still a very popular machine. It's quick to use, it gets a good feel very easily and it's another product that I just wanted to have and nobody made it, so I had to make it.'

How cool is this guy?? he did it himself. But yeah, he doesn't support the old products, even the 60, if you have a hardware problem, its akai's problem, not his, he'll only support the new OS and SCSI, which are his products, but he'll help you find what you need in general, but he ain't trying to save akai any money.

Homeboy invented the Drum Machine as we know it today, shyt even software sequencers use his concepts more than they'd like to admit.

Roger invented things that weren't out there already, stuff that he wanted that didn't exist. That's pretty much what built his name. The Adrenalinn was inspired by him using an Emu Modular analg synth with his guitar and doing sequenced filtering and stuff, he loved it, but he thought guitarists aren't that technical, how do we get this into their hands?

Enter the adrenalinn stomp box, beautiful, I got one and I love it. if you really want to support Roger, buy an Adrenalinn, you'll get wicked effects, filters and such, and you'll be supporting his next project too, ehich is supposed to be something like a drum machine, but something different than anything else out there.

^Word yo. I'd like to hear some of your material. Hip-Hop wise. Anyone gettin down like that has got to be coming with it.

Elma: Yo man, i'm just speaking from what i've heard you know. A partner of mine got direct service from Roger via his website. I didn't mean he's running a tech center. But he will go above and beyond to help someone out if e-mailed or contacted that owns his original works. Trust that.

By elmacaco Tue May 03, 2005 1:53 am
yeah man, he will help, that's right, homie has love for his machines and loves that people still use his machines. he must love that there are still so many 60 users, and new 60 users out there.

Yeah man, he's a real peace guy!

it all good as long as it sounds good and that depends on the user. I have to say that the user friendliness is easier on the earlier models. But I started later and I have no qualms on which tool is used as long as user knows what he or shes doing. I transfer alot of tips and technique from this board 60 and 3k cuz alot of the users are more experienced mpc users, but i have no lust, evny, or needs I`m happier now what the tool I have as you can tell from the avator. Always have and always will be a fan or hip hop and i respect the legacy of the creator of one of the tools MPC/SP/ASR and so on used to established the whole spectrum of dance music as we know it today.

Roger Linn was a great creator of studio drum tools and with much respect to the innovative, creative, and resourseful dj godfathers of Hip Hop Marly Marl, Jazzy Jay, Larry Smith and others who flipped the machines from just a drum machine to musical innovation bringing them to the forefront of dance music production cuz without them I would even dream of fooling with an mpc when everyone got so turntables.... :?: Mind over machine use whatever you got and enjoy. :D

you can tell that akai went back to the 60 and 3000 before designing the 4000 and 1000, because it must bug them that older products that they no longer make money on are competing with their new stuff.

On the 4000 you get some of the luxury of dedicated menu buttons back on the right side and around the pads, so ergonomics is making a comeback. I got respect for all MPCs, but I love excellent designs. The 4000 has some good ideas in it for sure.
