i keep hearing its alil more technical than the xl version, but exactly how much more?

Well you can get a scsi card reader and just connect it externally. Internal installation is difficult because there are no ports for ide or scsi but I don't know much more about it.

The PCD 40 will work but don't pay that much for it.

There are. I have some. I used to pick them up for a few dollars long ago from Jim Puckett.
