Yes! I bought mine 3 years ago, and havnt looked back since.
It's a true pro machine, I've got it for double of what you are
getting it for, so its a steal really congrats. Tough i got 30 unused
tapes with it.
It's funny w the armrest on it, i have actualy thought about switching my
3000 to a 60, just because it would look so cool
About the mixing thing without eq, its very simple and straightforawrd,
like elmacaco said, however i have the manual if u would run in some
trouble, or just pm me if u have some qquestions.

Yeah dude, that's a good deal for sure!! Also, get friendly with the guy who's selling it, since he is near you, he may know more people in your area who have gear they may want to sell, or he might have some old stuff that will be fun to use if you can get it from him.

Dig around for as many tapes as you can, if they are beta tapes or whatever, just stock the fuk up on them joints while you can.

If you want an old tape machine look into 2" 24 track

If anybody finds out where to get tapes for these please do tell... I searched for months and the only source I found was in the UK and they were out of stock. Like I said the company that made those tapes is no longer in producing them, so you are trying to find NOS or used tapes. In my opinion buying an MG1212 is only good if you want it for the mixer, and even then it is not all that... I have looked at a schematic for the MG1212 and it uses opamps similar in quality to those found in the tascam M series mixers. It's OK. But those tapes are the killer.

I think there are two versions, they use different kinds of tape, not too sure though. A websearch is in order for anyone buying one for sure.

No tape hiss whatsoever. It sounds huge and open. I've got recordings that didn't have anything but straight SP-1200 and the MG EQ's, and people thought I got it professionally mixed and mastered. No lie.

In reference to the Op-amp commment; I'd rather have OP's then cheap IC's. If your into mods, i'm sure you could replace the stock OP's with some next level ones to really get the Akai joint open. If I still had mine, i'd be on looking into that with a quickness.

In respects too the 2" comment, obviously a dedicated reel, particuarly a 1" or 2" tape machine, is going to knock Akai off it's block. Even a Studer 1/4" probably sounds quite a bit better. But even if you did purchase a Studer 1/4" 2-4 trk., your talking a $1,000+ for a couple of channels, and no mixer. A 2" is like 5 times the price. And, most any reel is going to be a maintainance monster. You have to know many things about reels and they're maintaince if you intend to operate one, and keep it functional. Prepare to get familar with schematics manuals, and a saudering gun.. And a measuring block etc.

The Akai requires virtually no maintaince other then a thourough lubing/swabbing once every 3-6 months (depending on how much use), captand adjustment, and maybe a demag if you want to go all out. I'd rather use the Akai all day over any tape machine out there, or any HDR.

Before I forget, whats your beef with Tascam!!! The M3500 console was used to record Michael Jacksons - Bad LP. And the MS16 is a great 1" machine. It sounds fantastic, and is low maintainace.

I'll look around and see if I can find the address and contact information for this cat I use to get my tapes from. He owns a warehouse in CT I belive. He had several thousand for sale. This was in like, 2003. So I'm sure he's still got an insane amount left.

Also, 2 inch kills $30 G protools systems, but 2 inch is now $250 a reel, so it better!!

for those of you dont know what beta max is, its the consumer end of betacam sp, which is a broadcast format tape, for video, uncompressed, prior that they used to use umatic tapes to master on, mastering houses. the tape is a great format, and it is still used for broadcast in a lot of third world countires. the only probaly i would have that machine is that where on earth are you gonna source those heads. the current heads on beta sp, are like 2500, and tht is just a stereo head with video tracks, so what about 12 or 14 tracks.

like tascam, reputations, they always make something tht is 10 times worth the cost of the machine, and they always a headof the game, tht product is an excellent product, and would sound better than daw, or even some multi tracks if you know what your doing.

i believe that product got shelved, and bought out. so it wouldnt become popular. even today tht would sound so good, man, i want one , damn i really want one. tht thing is a pro studio. those tapes are used to broadcast your damn television programs, oh man, i got to suorce one, but asi siad earler where the hell am i gonna find those heads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Op-amps are IC's (integrated circuits).
