Hardware Vs Software your opinion please?

it seems more and more people are relying more heavily on computers and software I know a lot of ill producers use protools etc. There are 9 million young cats out there on fruityloops. This seem to be more and more the case everyday.

Im trying to keep analouge alive how many people do you know that produce, that use analouge hardware only no computer. In my opinion im the guy still oil painting while everyone is using photoshop.

However im am going for an analouge sound, that is my approach my style. gritty grimmy and old warm analouge sound i want a Universal audio tube preamp, NEVE compressor, Tube Tech EQ etc. I dont have that kind of money right now im gonna have to settle for presonus, behringer, and DBX.

i know my mpc is a computer to a certain degree. try using your computer as a sequencer then use that arguement against me.

anyway disagree with me if you want i know many may. Once again this is my opinion my approach, style for productuion.

i used to be software only, but right know i use cubase sx3 for sequencing and tracking and use hardware about 95% of the time. the main problem with vsti's are the amount of time a patch takes to load. I can scan patches and edit them much faster on my synths and sound modules. as far as compression and eq nothing beats the uad-1 it has some serious fx in it and i have 3 and 1 powercore in the pc that i built.

considering all of this the most important part of the chain is the soundcard. i use a rme fireface 800 and the sound of this card is just sick. this is where most people try to cut corners, but this is by far the most important part if u wanna record from an external source.

i am going to be on the road a lot now so i will be doing a lot more with just my laptop and vsti's.

but to tell u the truth i can make tracks with anything so it really doesn't matter to me, but for now a blend is the most ideal situation.

i started off with all hardware. I had my tascam four track a digital roland 8 track. An mpc2000xl, an asr-88 plus all my live instruments. But now i am primarilly using acid pro 3 to sequence and chop samples and I still use my live instruments. I just like being able to have all of my samples ready to go all my effects I don't use vsti's very much I prefer original vintage gear. But in the abcense of money to have original vintage gear the vst's will get you by just fine.

have used both since back in the day.
what matters is your budget and your style.

look for cheap used hardware.
look for cheap, but good software.
mix and match and you'll be happy and busy.

its a real grey area for me. alot of the hardware these days running software on its dsp's emulating analogue hardware and saft. it still doesnt have the character and sonic range of the original gear. sounds to thin and sterile.

i like to combine software and hardware for the ultimate combination.

i started out makin beats on a cheap computer program years ago. i could never go back to that. i dont kno anything about computer based beats. ive **** wit fruity loops but definatly hated it. ive had mad multitracks but now i record on a computer. i would love to have a board n sh!t but i would definatly use it with the computer. hardware iz the illest. thats the basics always has been and always will be.

for those who perfer hardware over software what software have you used?

i am not saying software is better or worse than hardware or vice versa but "MOST" individuals at this forum do not have enough experence with hardware or software is know the benifits of each.

if i was on a tight budget and brought 1000s of dollars of hardware i would think hardware is better also. if you know your history of software the first vsti were model-e, retro as-1 and ppg wave 2.v and now we have lounge lizard, sonik synth 2, sampletank 2xl and reason 3.0 (with the bugs but the potential is there) which sound just as good as any hardware (not saying that is better).

if you only been making music/beats for a minute or two i understand your opinions but software is the wave of the future. that is why korg, yamaha, alesis, etc are making software.

name a hardware sequencer better than a software one.

Better for what? More features? yeah soft wins, but ease of use and simplicity as an instrument, hardware sequencers winn hands down. The reason is that Hardware needs to establish boundries, where as software tends to include everything anyone could possibly want, so you end up with so many features that you don't use but still have to wade through to get at the things you do need.

Better stability? hardware. Better longevity? Hardware. Better investment? Hardware. better interface? Hardware. Once you buy a controller you are buying accessories, so it's like buying some software to augment your hardweare sequencer and you're blurring the line.

I've used lots of software, it really just comes down to a preference.

You better sell retro AS-1 before it won't work on current computers!

Man I still use my ASR-10. I will NEVER sell, lose, trade or anything else with this board. It's one of the best workstations ever made. I used the whole franchise too (Mirage, EPS, EPS 16+) I own all of them still to this day. I grow up on hardware so it's alot more comfortable for me. I was forced into computer recording 2 years ago. Before that I was a 2" analog tape user. (I still have the equipment thou) I'm sure thou in 10 years future producers will be using software as the old school method and something new will be so called better to use. Plus software is so easy to use ANYBODY can make music!!!

that is a fact. i say i only use about 50% to 60% of cubase's features.

retro as-1 does not work on windows xp and i have not use in about 4 to 5 years. actually, retro s*cked.

i love my toys and i use to buy my hardware the same way. i have owned roland mc-50 and the roland model which had the mc-50 sequencer and tone module combined in one (roland mc-?). i love this music sh!t.

Plus software is so easy to use ANYBODY can make music!!!

hardware is simpler because the features set are smaller.

I think it depends on the software. using Cubase or Logic as your main production tool can be really awkward and takes a lot of getting used too. But since the propellerheads put out rebirth, the software with hardware accessibility has come on the scene and made software much more viable and easier to use for beginners. Fruity Loops basically started as an 808 sequencer with sampling, and it was so easy to dive right in and just do your thing. Now it is still fairly simple to get started on but the complexities are creeping it, but the basic step interface makes it easy for people to just get started. But like anything, you really only get rockin when you start loading your own samples in and using it like you would a sampler and not a sample CD with a sequencer, which is by and large the biggest market out there, just get the program, use the sounds up, then get the next program. Fruity isn't so much for that, you put your sounds in from vinyl and you are straight. Very Good Design.

Oh and I can vouch for MPC4000XL, I've seen him rocl FL with his controller, VST's soft synths effects, he's sick with it, he can boom and bap with the best of them.
