pc wont read files that are longer then 8 caracters.

Don`t know how to explain this ...

have a bunch of beats on floppies and yesterday I installed a internal zipdrive 100mb and replaced my floppydrive.

now when I tried to burn my .all & .aps files from floppy to cd-r ,
my pc wont read files that are longer then 8 caracters.

the problem is that I`ve named majority of files longer then 8 caracters.
example : drumsound_1 , drumsound_2 , drumsound_3 etc

so my pc reads only drumsound and not drumsound_1

so now when I tried to copy the files into the pc it tries to overwrite all the other with the same name...


help my out pleace

Ived worked so hard tryd to produce an album and now I cant acces my beats!

so what should I do to recover my files again?

is there a way to view all the caracters

is it possible to view them in dos ?

or should i install my floppy back so i can re-name them and burn them down on a cd-r and then put m zip back into the mpc?

Will my files be f***ed up on my floppy if I insert it into a pc?

I have had the PC destroy many of my floppy disks directory structure and I had to start over because of that. I just started all over again with ZIP and when I used a zip with the PC I always stuck with 8 character names to be on the safe side. I have no more problems now.

I don't know about viewing your files in DOS, I have never
tried that and it sounds risky so I wouldn't do it. Per MPC3000
"the MPC uses a modified version of DOS" so things could get
fugly if you do it.

the problem is:

should i install back my floppy so I can rename all files under 8 caracters

wich cost money or should I stick with my zip and just let a 6 months work go down the drain?

can some one just take an floppy with an useless sample that has an name over the 8 caracter limit and just see if pc f***`s up the floppy

Yes, but it takes those people more than a couple of hours to get away from real lives and come here to hang out.

Why would this cost money? It is a pretty simple operation and once the floppy is back in you are right back where you left off. Additonal work of renaming the files would not take less time than recreating the programs. Which is all that you lost, NOT months of work. The samples are still there, the sequences are still there.

This is something you could have easily researched before doing. I do not recall anything in the manual that says you can transfer MPC format files to PC format disks and back again. This would flip a red flag in my mind to go check into before doing.

My suggestion is to put the floppy back in so you can finish your work. Speaking of which, never make hardware changes in the middle of production. This is asking for trouble since anything that can go wrong will.

does that mean that aps & all files are still working if I install back my floppy?
