Should I tell them my age at first?

Well, Im only 14 but Ive gotten some looks for some high places and Im going to contact some too soon. I feel my material is ready but Im not sure if I should tell them my age at first. I mean like on the first phone call unless they ask. See, one time I had talked to someone who supposedly had tons of connects with the industry and I showed him my old stuff and he said my he liked my stuff but wanted to know how old I was. After I told him I never heard back from him. I just want some the vets opinions on if I should say "BTw Im 14" or if I should jsut wait and see if they like it and when I talk to them more. I knowI eventually got to tell them but Im talking first contacts. Thanks

The reason they won't talk to you is because at ur age they can't hold you to a contract legally, you can just walk. I'm not sure how you would handle that, maybe with your parents consent through a good entertainment lawyer they can make the deal happen. I'm sure there are others here that can help. If someone is ready to sign you, then you need an agent or manager to represent you. They will also setup a trust fund for your money, so yes like Death said you are too young to be obligated contractually. I am just curious, "Does someone want to sign you?". If the answer is yes then above works best, if the answer is NO-- I would suggest that you get with local cats in your neighborhood and develop your style and skills more. Someone once told me that, if you are "unfortunate" enough to get a contract when we were discussing business. <--- think about that, it's not all glam, it's 99.9% Business and you need to know that. Your age holds no problem, many TALENTED producers started really young. If you are aspiring, don't worry about a contract now, ppl think contracts are good for them. Contracts aren't the best thing that can happen to you, they can be good if you have a GREAT lawyer and they are expensive. Actually everyone losses something in a contract, whether good or bad contracts and even Stars. Labels have to report losses, but they are not that much. But as a business they are looking out for their interests.

I Agree! It's definitly a Bussiness with lot's of work. At your age u should focus most of your energy on talent your age and develop your skills and knowledge of the Business, read all u can, talk to as many people that have more info then u and soak it up like a Sponge. That way when a serious opportunity comes along you'll be ready. Your gonna lose either way, you just want to be able to put as much in your favor as possible. But don't let this talk stop u from pursuing your Carrer just get as much Ammo as u can Before the War starts lol Peace!!!!!

I am by no means trying to discourage you, but rather tell you the truth so that you don't over anticipate this industry. It's full of liars and sharks, because of the amount of money that CAN be made, remember CAN.

btw, post some of your music or PM me. I am a very harrrd critic and it's out of love, but I do know when I hear good music. Most A&R are wayyy harder and harsher than I could ever be, but I do think I have a nact because 9X out of 10 if I hear an advance album I can pick the singles before they are even stated Not tooting my own horn....

i started makin beats on the comp. when i was 10. i never told ne bpdy my age...till i got some looks from people. back in those days, when i was entering high school, i had a full grown beard and a deep ass voice (hehe), so most of the time, they didnt ask.

to tell you the truth, if ur shit is hot, then your age WILL NOT MATTER!! if the people that are trying to work with you are discouraged by ur age...then u dont need to be workin wit them ne way...CUZ THEY LOOKIN FOR A QUICK BUCK, and the dont have your interests and goals in mind.

so my answer...dont tell them ur age, till you get down to serious bid-ness. if ur shit is hot its gonna be hot no matter what ur age.

now on the other side of things, piggy backin offa what bboutit said...if u as good as say u are NOW, then think bout how hot u'll be when u tweak and master ur craft.

I started out the same i was makin tracks and producin for up and comin bands when i was your age and then i had an interview with arista records here in irelnd for their urban artists, when i was 15 - but i looked alot older and i wore a suit and what not... I was sitting at a table with 3 people 1 woman and two guys, asking me all sorts of questions, they liked my stuff, there was no question about that i reckon i nearly had the job until i told them my age, they said i just havent got enogh expeirence with workin with other people in theenviorment of a studo with deadlines and so on..
So theres a lot of aspects when it comes to your age im only 17 right now and im still havin these problems.....

That's strange..... Get someone to represent you then, like a manager. Then the manager would be responsible for you being in the studio and such, you will have to give up points. I would bargain for 9 or 10 "HENCE" you are just starting.
